The Entrepreneurship Division now invites paper and symposium proposals for the 2021 Academy of Management Annual Meeting, July 30 – August 3, 2021. Proposals should fit the domain of the Entrepreneurship Division which includes not only the phenomena of self-employment, new-venture formation, small-business management, innovation, and firm growth, but also more general ideas about the recognition, analysis, and exploitation of perceived entrepreneurial opportunities; the nature of novelty, creativity, and innovativeness among individuals and organizations; and how people and groups exercise judgment under uncertainty and in a variety of contexts.

This year's conference theme is "Bringing the Manager Back in Management.” Given that firms must interact with increasing uncertainty caused by factors outside the firm like the climate or a global pandemic, or inside the firm, caused by technological change, the role of the manager is becoming increasingly more complex. The theme asks how management researchers can better serve practicing managers and prepare for their needs in the future. Entrepreneurship research fits quite well since the “Manager” can be understood more broadly as a decision-maker in any organization, including founders, employees, and others who must deal with these uncertainties. The importance of the role of the entrepreneur in addressing uncertainty has been studied since the 1800’s when J.B. Say coined the term. As such, because the entrepreneur simultaneously takes on risk and benefits from the success of taking on this risk, our understanding of how entrepreneurs mitigate uncertainty and risk will help managers in moving forward. As members of the Entrepreneurship Division we are in a privileged position to produce and disseminate this knowledge to practitioners to address the challenges of risk and uncertainty in the 21st century. Thus, we invite members of the Entrepreneurship Division to offer further insight and join in the discussions around this critical theme, though proposals on any topic related to entrepreneurship are welcome.

Paper and symposium proposals are due Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 5:00 PM ET (NY Time). The submission system will open in early December 2020. Submission guidelines and instructions are here. While we are particularly interested in submissions that relate to the conference theme, papers and symposia on any aspect of entrepreneurship are welcome.
