Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the "Social Venturing in the Social Sciences" initiative. Business venturing is often promoted as a desirable mechanism for transferring knowledge from research-intensive universities to the private sector for commercialisation. Yet, universities face difficulties in fostering business venturing and creating spin-offs, particularly from social science research. This project seeks to address this issue. It will pilot-test a research intervention to scale up the impact of social science research through commercialisation. The framework is grounded in Prospective Inquiry and Social Venturing, leveraging the power of social science knowledge and the motivation behind social enterprising.
The successful applicant will work alongside the project PI, Prof Pablo Muñoz, to execute the pilot and move it towards a sustainable university initiative in the social sciences. The pilot will last 36 months and involve 10 research projects in total, two in year one and three in years 2 and 3. Each research project team will go through a 12-month research venturing process. You will work Prof Muñoz and the wider team, as well as academics across the university and local SMEs to implement this methodology and facilitate the intervention.
The role is funded by Durham University Business School's Smart & Scale initiative which is an interdisciplinary impact-driven research programme in smart and scale-up activities, focusing on innovation and business development of SMEs in the North-East of England.
Responsibilities:
- To work with the Principal Investigator and other colleagues in the research project, as appropriate, to implement the methodology and intervention, develop new research and extend the research portfolio.
- To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
- To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator
- To facilitate publishing high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder.
- To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator and other colleagues in the research project and offering creative or innovative solutions.
- To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
- To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
- To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
- To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors, and students as appropriate.
- To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
- To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
- To engage in continuing professional development by participation in the undergraduate or postgraduate teaching programmes or by membership of departmental committees, etc. and by attending relevant training and development courses.
This post is fixed term for 24 months and may not be extendible for a further length of time depending on the term of Professor Muñoz and the research contract.
The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by February 2024.
