Abstract: In this essay, I investigate whether differences in macroeconomic experiences during individuals' formative years affect their business formation rates throughout their careers. Leveraging data from the NLSY panel, my analysis reveals a substantial negative impact on the likelihood of individuals initiating an incorporated enterprise throughout their careers if they lived in regions that faced a significant shock to unemployment during their formative years. Consistent with the prior literature, experiencing a negative macroeconomic shock during adolescence also significantly increases the risk aversion of an individual. However, the observed decrease in the propensity of young adults who experienced an economic shock during adolescence to start an incorporated business is only partially explained by an increase in risk aversion.
