We would like to invite you to the following event:

[Session #134] Diamonds in the Rough
Job Market Realities: Opportunity and Equality in Academia (Session 134)

    August 8th, 2020
12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, Eastern Standard Time (UTC-4)

    Session Format

REAL-TIME - OPEN: Presenters and audience on live-streamed video.

    Purpose

This panel is part of our Diamonds in the Rough PDW but is open to all who are registered to attend AOM. The goal of this panel is to provide junior scholars with career-related advice and job market information. Influential, senior scholars will describe how they forged their career paths and the obstacles they faced and will also share their opinions regarding the future of hiring in our field.

    Content

This year we focus on job market realities regarding job opportunities and gender/race equality in academia, especially in response to the following events:

    • A series of racist and sexist threads on a third-party job market spreadsheet last fall which suggested that university hiring policies were unfairly favoring minorities and discriminating against white people and men.

    • The unprecedented and destructive influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hiring process in our field.

    • The recent magnification of racism, injustice, and discrimination and the Black Lives Matter movement to end systemic racism in the US and around the world.

We are very pleased to have the following influential MOC scholars as our panelists who will share their perspectives on the job market related to these issues and their own career journeys.

    • Morela Hernandez (University of Virginia)
    • David M. Mayer (University of Michigan)
    • Eero Vaara (University of Oxford)

    Who can attend?

Our workshop is open to everybody attending AOM, but senior doctoral students, post-docs, and junior faculty members may find it most helpful.

If you have any other questions, please contact the workshop organizing committee at sjcreary@wharton.upenn.edu

We hope you join our conversation!

    Sincerely,

    Beth Livingston, University of Iowa

Ji Woon (June) Ryu, Indiana University

    Wayne Johnson, Cornell University

Stephanie Creary, University of Pennsylvania (MOC Executive Committee member)
