    Position Description (responsibilities/duties)

    Texas State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Management. The Department of Management is a highly collegial and intellectually vibrant group of approximately 23 fulltime faculty that offers a BBA in Management with concentrations in Entrepreneurial Studies, and Human Resources, a Master of Science in Human Resource Management, and provides significant support to a large MBA program.

    The chair has the responsibility for the administration of the department, which includes responsibility for the implementation of university, college, and department policies and the development, coordination, and administration of all academic programs and activities within the department.  This includes providing effective and inclusive leadership that fosters shared governance.  As a representative of the department, the chair is expected to articulate program aspirations, directions, standards, and points of view to other groups inside and outside the university community.     Successful applicants must demonstrate the ability to provide academic leadership, mentor faculty and students, conduct and publish high-quality scholarly research, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses.  The chair is responsible for managing the department's budget and leading the department on matters related to curriculum innovation and research impact, recruitment and performance evaluation of faculty and staff, and the formulation and implementation of strategic priorities.  The chair will work with the dean in seeking and facilitating external giving and resource development for the department.

    Qualifications

    The Department of Management is particularly interested in recruiting an individual who will foster a highly collegial culture and support the advancement of the department as the university transitions to a top-tier research institution while retaining a focus on high-quality teaching.   

    Successful applicants for Department Chair should demonstrate or provide examples of the following qualifications either in their vita or cover letter:

    Required:

    • A Ph.D. from an AACSB-accredited institution, in management or a closely related discipline;
    • A sustained record of quality research, effective teaching, and service commensurate with appointment to full professor in the Department of Management at Texas State University; and
    • Effective administrative experience that indicates the applicant will be successful in managing a complex academic organization.

    Preferred:

    • Evidence of effective leadership that fosters a collaborative culture within an AACSB-accredited college, in a large public university;
    • Experience in mentoring junior faculty and supporting faculty development in the areas of teaching, research (including grants), and service while maintaining a collegial academic environment;   
    • Ability to facilitate strategic planning and develop department/organizational goals; 
    • Ability to manage budgets and allocate resources;
    • Record of participating in, designing, leading, and/or implementing innovative programs that are responsive to meeting market needs; 
    • Ability to advocate for and secure resources for the department;
    • Interest in building alliances and/or partnerships in academia and business communities; and
    • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
