Here are Michigan State University our academic
entrepreneurship program is five semesters old. We have about 600 students earning a
Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
During some recent analysis we found out that participation in the Minor among first-generation college students occurs at about twice the rate of our campus population. Of all students in the Minor, 22.4% are first-generation students whereas they are just 9.9% in our campus population as a whole (for undergraduates).
The same phenomenon is true for African American students. They represent 14.7% of all students in the Minor vs. 7.3% of all undergraduate students.
When I was sharing this data with some faculty the other day, one person asked whether this was unusual and whether it was comparable to other universities. Good question, thought I.
Has anyone else looked at this? Does anyone know of any studies on this topic? Or would you be willing to share your own data to see if this is representative or an outlier?
FWIW, our gender and Hispanic numbers were pretty much in line with the campus population.
Sincerely,
Neil Kane
