Pathways to Connect Research and Practice:
Developing Practice-Inspired Entrepreneurship Research
For at least the past 20 years, there has been an ongoing debate between scientific rigor and practical relevance in academic research, causing a disconnect between academics and entrepreneurs. Instead of an either-or debate, we explore innovative modes of practice-inspired academic research, in which researchers and practitioners collaboratively identify and collectively explore meaningful research questions - research questions that will be useful to entrepreneurs in practice and publishable in global research journals. This PDW explores how research opportunities can be discovered/created through the same customer discovery and design thinking processes which we teach our entrepreneurship students. As a result of this PDW, scholars will be better prepared to co-create rigorous and relevant research alongside entrepreneurs. Furthermore, as a scholarly community, we will brainstorm ideas for practice-inspired research consortia and programs as well as innovative publishing pathways.
