2023 AOM ENT Division Global Scholar Development Committee Report

AOM ENT division, Boston 2023
Global Scholar Development Committee (GSDC)
Chair: Yuliya Snihur, TBS Education

Global Scholar Development Committee is the catalyst for the development of international scholarship. It empowers academics worldwide to better understand, navigate, and connect with the academic community of entrepreneurship scholars.

We held the Global Scholar Development Workshop on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 6 to 8 pm in Boston. We had 67 interested scholars who registered for the event and about 20 attendees joined the workshop. Scholars at all levels, including PhD students, early-, mid-, and late-career attendees were welcomed.

During the first hour we held a panel with journal editors from major generalist AOM and entrepreneurship-related journals including Denis Grégoire (AMJ), Gideon Markman (AMP), Ute Stephan (JOM), Moren Lévesque (ETP), Phil Kim, Simon Parker, and Dennis Park (JBV), and Peter Klein (SEJ). This was an interactive panel that dealt with questions concerning the differentiation among journals, their positioning in terms of publishing policy-related research, and exciting topics of research to look forward to, among other topics.

The second hour involved roundtable discussions facilitated by journal editors and members of the GSDC standing committee (Benson Honig, Sofia Johan, Esra Memili, Norris Krueger and Maribel Guerrero). During this roundtable session, participants got more specific answers to their questions from the senior members of the AOM ENT community about publishing, networking, and career-related topics.

Global Scholar Development Committee is the catalyst for the development of international scholarship. It empowers academics worldwide to better understand, navigate, and connect with the academic community of entrepreneurship scholars.

We held the Global Scholar Development Workshop on Friday, August 5 2022 from 6 to 8 pm in Seattle. It was our first event in-person in three years. We had 52 interested scholars who registered for the event and about 25 attendees joined the workshop, with most of them participating for the first time in the event. Scholars at all levels, including Ph.D. students, early, mid-, and late-career attendees were welcomed.

During the first hour, we held a panel with journal editors from major entrepreneurship-related journals including Denis Grégoire (AMJ), Moren Lévesque (ETP), Christina Theodoraki (SBE), Don Neubaum (FBR), Oana Branzei (JBV), Dennis Park (JBV), Ute Stephen (ETP), Gideon Markman (JMS & AMP), and Peter Klein (SEJ). This was an interactive panel that dealt with questions concerning the differentiation among journals, their positioning in terms of publishing policy-related research, and exciting topics of research to look forward to, among other topics.

The second-hour involved roundtable discussions facilitated by journal editors, a global research project leader (Vasyl Taras), and members of the GSDC standing committee (Marjan Gorgievski, Sofia Johan, Esra Memili, and Benson Honig). During this roundtable session, participants got more specific answers to their questions from the senior members of the AOM ENT community about publishing, networking, and career-related topics. Based on the mini-survey conducted at the end of the event, attendees would like to stay connected and attend future GSDC events.

After the event, we shared the contact email addresses of the registered attendees and committee members to enable further interaction and create stronger links between members as our aim is to have a thorough representation of and connections among entrepreneurship researchers worldwide.

Message from the Global Scholar Development Committee

By Esra Memili
Chair, Global Scholar Development Committee

The Entrepreneurship Division’s Global Scholar Development Committee (GSDC) has been staying connected with past participants of events at the AOM Annual Meetings, including the DISCOtech, which usually takes place the first Friday evening of each conference. Based upon a mini survey the GSDC conducted, a majority of participants believe that these events have helped to connect scholars at all levels and spark collaborations globally. Past attendees have also expressed interested in participating in future events. Although we must postpone this year’s DISCOtech, the GSDC is excitedly planning next year’s event at the AOM Annual Meeting in August 2021.

Please also join the current GSDC members – Esra Memili (Chair), Marjan Gorgievski, Maribel Guerrero, Benson Honig, Inna Kozlinska, Norris Krueger, Sreevas Sahasranamam, and David Urbano – in welcoming our newest committee members, who will help to expand our reach in increasingly diverse regions around the world:

  • Ona Akpeki Akemu, Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan
  • Yuliya Snihur, Toulouse Business School, France
  • Nava Michael Tsabari, Tel Aviv University, Israel

We are happy to stay connected and look forward to seeing everyone at AOM 2021.

AoM ENT Division Global Scholar Development Committee event was held at AoM 2019 on August 9 between 6:30-8:30 pm with about 50 attendees. The event was a success this year with the majority of the attendees participating the first time and scholars at all levels with diverse research interests in Entrepreneurship were all welcome.

The event started with a welcome reception and then an introduction by GSDC Chair Esra Memili. The first part of the plenary session involved short presentations by the Editors: Igor Filatotchev (Journal of Management Studies), Thomas Zellweger (Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice), Torsten Pieper (Journal of Family Business Strategy), Tyge Payne (Family Business Review), George Salomon (Journal of Small Business Management), and Kim Eddleston (Journal of Business Venturing). The second plenary session was with global research project leaders Philipp Sieger (GUESSS) and Andrea Calabro (STEP). The last part of the program involved roundtable discussions with the editors, global research projects leaders, moderators (Benson Honig, Sreevas Sahasranamam, Max Lude, Sohrab Soleimanof, Maribel Guerrero, David Urbano, Inna Kozlinska, and Viviane Neiter), and the audience.
Based on the mini-survey conducted at the end of the event, many attendees could identify new international research partnership opportunities and would like to stay connected and attend future GSDC events.

Here are some testaments of the participants this year:

“Many thanks to you for putting together such a phenomenal program and for the opportunity to be involved.”
“Thank you very much for organizing this excellent event and the opportunity to listen and interact with speakers and the rest of the participants.”
“Thanks for organizing a very informative session. I really enjoyed being involved.”

Our aim is to have a thorough representation of and connections among Entrepreneurship researchers across countries and establish partnerships. Through this, GSDC has been building an AoM Entrepreneurship global research community that can lead to high-quality journal publications.

DISCOtech 2018 and the Global Scholar Development Committee

From the DISCOtech 2018 organizers Marjan Gorgievski, David Urbano and Norris Krueger

On August 10, 2018, DISCOtech (Development of International Scholarship Collaboration Opportunities and the techniques) was organized for the third consecutive time as an annually recurring social event at the AOM annual meeting in Chicago. DISCOtech aims to empower scholars to connect to individuals from other countries and to develop broad collaborations that cross national, methodological and disciplinary boundaries. In order to reach this goal, it provides scholars the opportunity to meet face-to-face in an informal setting and to share ideas, expertise and experience.DISCOtech 2018

WHAT WENT ON?

Theme of this year’s DISCOtech event was “International entrepreneurship research”. Four editors were invited whose journals fitted with this theme, namely Ute Stephan from Applied Psychology: an International Review (AP:IR); Lois Shelton for the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior Research (IJEBR); Leo-Paul Dana for the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business (IJESB)/Journal of International Entrepreneurship (JIE); and Norris Krueger for the Elgar book series “Impact of entrepreneurship research”. They shared valuable information on the mission of their journals and book series, gave tips to get published and had lively discussions with the audience. The foci of the presented journals resonate well with the mission of DISCOtech and participants’ interests and may be attractive outlets for out- of- the- box entrepreneurship research with an international component. The AP:IR and IJEBR editors were proud to pronounce the new SSCI citation impact scores, which are 2.5 for AP:IR and 1.7 for IJEBR.

After the editor’s sessions, four renowned researchers pitched their international projects with the aim of increasing international coverage: Andrew Maxwell pitched his project on entrepreneurial failure,. Benson Honig on refugees and entrepreneurship,; Philipp Sieger presented the GUESSS project on student entrepreneurship, and José Ernesto Amorós on technological ventures. In the following brain storm session, participants explored synergies and opportunities to connect. If you are interested to find out more, please read the official DISCOtech 2018 report HERE. This report also contains contact information of the program coordinators.

WHAT NEXT?

DISCOtech is one of the main activities of the Global Scholar Development Committee (GSDC). The GSDC provides a platform to keep the momentum going and to stimulate the nascent collaborations formed at DISCOtech. Over the past years, the GSDC has started to build a community, which now counts about 70 members. There is a hard core of 15 active members who have been the driving force behind the GSDC initiatives, for example as ambassadors during the DISCOtech events. Their efforts are gratefully acknowledged. For other initiatives of the GSDC, our chair Norris Krueger will keep you updated. Watch out for his well-known phrase: “How you can get involved!” and also note: More photos on FB!

Global Scholar Development Committee – DISCOtech

by Norris Krueger
Committee Chair

Hi, everyone! Three quick items for the NewsBlast this year. Our members wanted to know about DISCOtech 2018 (and the Global Scholar Development Committee) and what I’m planning as a newly-elected RAL. First, you will be at DISCOtech on Friday evening in Chicago. No excuses that it conflicts with the Friday night free drinks by the exhibitors. ;) It was a blast in 2017 and will only get better this year!

1. My new red Chucks are ready for Chicago. ($25 at Zappos too…)

2.  #VoxPopuliRocks a/k/a My RAL Agenda: As an experiment, I asked this question of Division members on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Connect, and will again in the NewsBlast. “As a new RAL, my portfolio is pretty empty – what might I work on to benefit the members of the Division? Got an excellent response rate (and not just because I really liked them all) and I expect more from you, dear reader. Thus far, five different great ideas with multiple suggestions. I want more! (Happy to share the current Fab Five.)
So… how can I help YOU as a scholar, educator practitioner?

3. DISCOtech! Despite lacking any rotating chrome mirror ball, we had over 30 attendees showing up and talking about possible projects where we could collaborate across schools, continents methodologies. Marjan Gorgievski agreed to chair/host DISCOtech and she, David Urbano & I have begun marketing, especially to past attendees. We expect to have a list of potential topics available to attendees in advance and part of our AoM agenda is to finalize mechanisms to keep the ball rolling and to identify appropriate KPIs so we can monitor progress (as brilliantly suggested by the Exec Committee).

Here is the blurb that we’ve used for marketing:
Much as Studio 54 was the catalyst for a new era in the New York City scene, our DISCOtech is the catalyst for the Development of International Scholarship Collaboration Opportunities and the techniques needed to support global research collaborations. It empowers scholars to connect with individuals who live, work and/or conduct research in countries of interest to a scholar, and to discuss strategies for developing broad collaborations that cross national, cultural and methodological in research and beyond. If you want great opportunities to connect in an informal setting that provides for individuals like you to meet others to conspire on research collaborations, DISCOtech will be the place. In 2017, we had over 30 attendees from 6 continents, quantitative and qualitative, and ranging from leading scholars to doctoral students. Imagine what 2018 will bring!

What do YOU want to research in productive collaborations? And how can WE help you? If you have an interest, please contact DISCOtech chair Marjan Gorgievski-Duijvesteijn <gorgievski@essb.eur.nl> or David Urbano or Norris Krueger. If you do, we will be circulating the submitted ideas so we can get a head start. Afterward, we will be following up. We can't promise a spinning chrome disco ball*, but we CAN promise great conversation and even greater people!
* we would need extra insurance… yikes! (and LOL)

So…
1. tell me what *I* can do to help you grow as a scholar, educator practitioner?
2. Contact Marjan <gorgievski@essb.eur.nl> and add DISCOtech to your AoM program!
