    Interesting idea... Maybe checkout "Halt and Catch Fire" also.  While Silicon Valley dramatizes more or less the "Facebook"-type era of derivative startups, Halt and Catch Fire shows real innovation when it was like the wild west. There was no common formula. This show of the earlier days of the Tech Industry might give hints on how to create companies that truly set new standards and push the boundaries. You had to invent the technology. VCs were not a big part of the picture. Bootstrapping was more prominent. I was there and lived through the fun and innovation of the 1980s and 90s.

    Hey Norris, I LOVE using clips from popular culture to help demonstrate and explore course concepts (and even wrote an entire book doing that with Seinfeld!). My challenge with Silicon Valley specifically is the "adult" language and contexts used, which may detract from a healthy classroom environment. For example, I would be very uncomfortable introducing and discussing in class the situation in which "middle out" was derived in Season 1. However, I would love to hear others' thoughts and suggestions for incorporating popular culture references during class!

    In response to Scott's question about ways to incorporate popular culture into class, my way is via commercials. I have been collecting commercials for (and across) decades and use them to punctuate ideas in classes. For example, when I talk about channel inconsistency, I use the over-the-top of example of an employee seeking the rest of the day off to take his sick daughter to the doctor, but he's dressed for golf (https://adland.tv/adnews/fedex-fedex-cup-sick-daughter-2007-30-usa). Today an enormous range of commercials are available to link-to or download for free, and at 30 to 60 seconds, provide a change of pace. Most of have commercials we recall for one reason or another, and finding them online and sharing them in your classes is an easy way to start.
