    Dear ENT Colleagues,

Are you a PhD student or junior scholar looking to grow your professional network, discuss exciting ideas, and get feedback on your research from peers and established scholars in an intimate setting? The Institute for an Entrepreneurial Society in the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is pleased to invite you to apply to attend the following professional workshop this October:

    STAKEHOLDERS, PROPERTY RIGHTS, AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP:

     NEW FRONTIERS FOR FOUNDATIONAL QUESTIONS

    October 26–28, 2023

    hosted by

THE INSTITUTE FOR AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SOCIETY (IES)

Whitman School of Management, Syracuse University

    Syracuse, NY USA

The appropriate role of stakeholders in firms' decision making is increasingly debated, resurfacing longstanding inquiry into the role of business in society while raising new questions about the nature and role of property rights in the firm. These issues are particularly salient for entrepreneurs, whose primary functions include the introduction of novel property rights arrangements and the remediation of supposed market failures. For example, entrepreneurs often create value via new approaches to ownership and control rights not only in relation to private goods but also "public" goods and common pool resources. Hence, although stakeholder theory and property rights perspectives are often presumed oppositional, entrepreneurship offers a fruitful context for integration and new insights on these important issues.

The workshop seeks to bring together emerging and established scholars from across disciplines to engage in discussion and cultivate new research at this pivotal intersection, focusing on topics including (but not limited to):

The role of entrepreneurs in re-constructing property rights

The promise and limits of entrepreneurship as a vehicle for mitigating market failures

The positive and normative relationships between entrepreneurs and stakeholders

The role and effects of policy and culture on entrepreneurs' stakeholder engagement

The workshop will feature a keynote lecture by Peter Klein (Baylor University) along with an esteemed group of panelists including, but not limited to, Per Bylund (Oklahoma State University), Maria Minniti (Syracuse University), and Mark Packard (Florida Atlantic University). Attendance will be limited to a small number of participants to allow for significant interaction. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss their research and receive feedback in an intimate, constructive setting.

Thanks to the generous support of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, lodging and food will be provided for all participants. Travel support may also be available. Junior faculty and graduate students interested in participating are encouraged to submit a copy of their CV and a 3-page research summary by September 22, 2023. Submissions and other inquiries can be sent to David Lucas (dlucas01@syr.edu). Selected participants will be notified of acceptance by September 29, 2023. The workshop will begin with an optional dinner on the evening of Thursday, October 26 and conclude after lunch on Saturday, October 28.

The Institute for an Entrepreneurial Society (IES) is a research institute housed in the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. IES focuses on educating the next generation of entrepreneurship scholars, producing top-tier academic research related to the cultivation of a just and prosperous society through entrepreneurship, and translating these insights into practical guidance for business and policy leaders.
