PDW on Multiple Categorization: When Classification Systems Converge an Diverge
Saturday, August 1, 2026, 4:45-6:45 PM ET
Sheraton Hotel, Philadelphia Ballroom North
We are happy to invite you to our PDW on "Multiple Categorization: When Classification Systems Converge and Diverge", sponsored by the OMT and ENT Divisions, at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management 2026 in Philadelphia!
Actors and entities in organizational life, including organizations, products, and even market categories, are simultaneously evaluated through multiple, distinct classification systems operating along cognitive, regulatory, and normative dimensions. This PDW explores how organizations navigate these systems and manage tensions when different classification schemes impose conflicting demands. Together, we aim to generate new insights into audience heterogeneity and evaluation, strategic categorization, cultural entrepreneurship, and the institutional dynamics that shape organizational outcomes in complex categorical environments.
We are fortunate to have five wonderful panelists bringing their perspectives to these topics: Heewon Chae (Arizona State University), Stine Grodal (Northeastern University), Christi Lockwood (University of Virginia), J. Cameron Verhaal (Tulane University), and Eric Zhao (University of Oxford).
Part 1 is open to everyone attending. For Part 2, we encourage you to register ahead of time for a small-group roundtable format where you can discuss your own research, questions, or ideas directly with the panelists. No abstract or short paper submissions required!
When: Saturday, August 1, 2026, 4:45-6:45 PM ET
Where: Sheraton Hotel, Philadelphia Ballroom North
Deadline to register for the roundtable: Monday, July 6, 2026
