PDW on Entrepreneurship, Inequality, and Society: Implications for Organizations and Policy

Saturday at 12:30-2:00 in the Boston Hynes Convention Center

Please join Tim Folta (University of Connecticut), Bill Schulz (University of Utah), Jeffrey York (University of Colorado), Cristina Cruz (Instituto de Empresa), Lisa Mali Jones Christensen (Brigham Young University), and Robert Eberhart (Stanford University) for a  PDW to help spur and develop ideas for papers addressing how the phenomenon of entrepreneurship shapes society far beyond the spawning and success of individual new ventures.

Entrepreneurship is shaping how we deal with problems such as climate change, income inequality, work-life balance, and economic development. Rather than focusing on the entrepreneur as an economic agent, we are encouraging research which investigates broader societal impacts of entrepreneurship. This coincides with an increased, and perhaps over-placed emphasis, on the entrepreneur as lever for societal change. It is fundamental to understand when entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship can be a force for positive versus negative change. By shifting focus away from the venture, and towards broader societal impacts, this PDW will cover important new ground and encourage a better understanding of entrepreneurship.

These issues are the focus of an upcoming special issue of Academy of Management Perspectives. This PDW will focus attention on the special issue, assist scholar develop ideas for this special issue, and improve paper readiness.
