My old friend Craig Montuori (you may know his name from the Global EIR project that was a nice backdoor Startup Visa).
He emailed me with this question. TL;DR What do know about FDI in the form of startups from another country who launch in, say, the USA, and bring capital with them?
here's his exact query - TIA for helping him out (he's definitely someone you want to be connected to!)
I've got an interesting question here that I wonder if you know any researchers in the space. Sanskriti and I have been discussing how to consider foreign direct investment (FDI) from the perspective of newly arriving, internationally-founded startups who are intending to do 99% of their growth here in the US after arriving. Most FDI is of the form of a mature corporate ($100+ ARR) opening up a factory ($100m capital expenditure, 1000 jobs OOM) or satellite office ($10m, 10-100 jobs OOM) that economic development offices hunt for landing through business attraction and site selection engagement frameworks.
These offices don't have the bandwidth, nor expertise to chase startups, who show up on their own and for their own reasons without any support or welcome.
Do you know of any papers or researchers in this space who might want to engage with Sanskriti as she looks to deepen her expertise on this subject?
Thanks,
Craig
