Background:
Hybrid entrepreneurs, or entrepreneurs that hold a paid job, are a large and economically impactful part of the entrepreneurial population. While studies of hybrid entrepreneurship have stimulated important contributions to entrepreneurship theory (e.g., on timing, entry, and uncertainty), related research has been slow to develop. This slow development is due in part to many challenges: lack of awareness of the phenomenon in the Academy, barriers to publication, overlapping use of the word "hybrid" with scholars studying social entrepreneurship, lack of suitable datasets, lack of integration into the related broader literatures (e.g., multiple jobholding, corporate entrepreneurship, cultural and academic entrepreneurship), and a perceived lack of theoretically grounded (and therefore publishable) research questions.
In this PDW, we seek to expand our knowledge by integrating entrepreneurship, human resources, psychology, and other disciplines. Some of the illustrative research topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Challenges associated with hybrid employees from employers' perspectives
• Negative and positive spillovers from venture to job / job to venture
• Psychological challenges facing hybrid entrepreneurs, including well-being, stress, work-life balance, burnout, etc.
• Performance implications of hybrid entrepreneurs' businesses
• Hybrids as catalysts for intrapreneurial opportunities
• Time allocation between paid employment and venture
• Hybrids as catalysts for female, social and sustainable entrepreneurship
• HR policy and reward systems for hybrid entrepreneurs
