    We are seeking to hire a junior scholar in the field of sustainability and entrepreneurship. If the idea of spending some time in Kyoto to focus on research interests you, then you should contact me--perhaps during the AOM in Boston. Although this is advertised as a fix-term position due to the project funding, there will always be opportunities to move to a permanent position.

    Kyoto University Graduate School of Management Job Opening for Endowed Chair Program-Specific Senior Lecturer or Program-Specific Assistant Professor

    Position Description:

    The Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University invites applications for Program-Specific Senior Lecturer or Program-Specific Assistant Professor (a fixed-term, non-tenure-track assistant professor) in the field of entrepreneurship and environmental management, sustainable accounting and other related social science fields such as innovation, sociology and environmental studies, beginning as early as in February, 2024. Preference will be given to candidates with the capacity to publish in top-tier management and social science journals on such topics as green, sustainability and entrepreneurship. This position is funded by the project budget of the newly established Endowed Chair for Green Entrepreneurship Research, which will employ outstanding talent to promote cutting-edge research on the subject. A successful candidate will be able to focus on research with a limited level of teaching and other obligations.

    Located in the ancient capital of Japan, Graduate School of Management provides a vibrant intellectual and collegial environment. GSM has MBA programs taught in English and Japanese and a Ph.D. program. It is highly ranked and respected in Japan and Asia. Kyoto University is a top national university in Japan that covers almost all the academic disciplines, from natural sciences to humanities and social sciences. An emerging research cluster of green, sustainability and entrepreneurship consists of Japanese and international scholars who are interested in a wide range of topics, such as the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals, innovation, new wave style of corporate governance and entrepreneurship.

    Kyoto University provides a range of supporting services to international researchers, such as visa applications, Japanese language training, housing search, and other logistical issues related to relocation.

    Expectation and Responsibilities:
    1. Conduct research on green entrepreneurship for high quality publications in the field of management or related social science fields.
    2. Offer one course on some relevant topics a year-long seminar-style course for supervising a small number of graduate students.
    3. Participate in a limited amount of the project management and departmental duties at the Graduate School of Management.

     Starting Date and Contract Term:
    February 1, 2024 (negotiable)
    The initial contract term is until June 30, 2026. The contract is conditionally renewable, based on internal evaluation of research, teaching, and program-specific activities.

    Rank and Title:
    Full-time, Program-Specific Senior Lecturer or Program-specific Assistant Professor. “Program-Specific” refers to the position funded by a fixed-term program/project.

    Salary and Support:
    Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Any allowance such as commuting expenses, housing expenses, bonuses, etc. is not provided. The discretionary labour system will be applied (based on seven hours and 45 minutes per day, 38 hours 45 minutes per week). The employee is eligible for MEXT mutual aid association membership, employees’ pensions, employment insurance, and workers’ compensation insurance.

    Days off
    Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, Year-end and New Year holidays, and University Foundation Day.

    Requirements for the Position:
    1. Applicants for this position must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree or equivalent in management or a related field by the date of appointment.
    2. Applicants should be able to document excellent research qualifications, for example, through prior publications, ideally related to the field of green entrepreneurship and the relevant areas such as entrepreneurial ecosystem, environmental management and accounting, and sustainability and innovation.
    3. Excellent communication skills in English (Japanese speaking ability is appreciated but not obligatory)

    Selection Process:
    1. Document Review
    We will conduct an extensive review of applicants' research achievements, including but not limited to published work, ongoing research projects, and significant contributions to their respective fields.
    2. Interviews and Research Reports
    Candidates shortlisted from the document review stage will be invited for interviews and to present their research reports in the form of open seminars. These interviews will assess language proficiency in English and Japanese, along with the candidate's overall competence and suitability for the role.
    3. Notification
    Candidates will be notified of their selection status in due course after the interview and research report presentation.
    4. Online or In-Person Interviews
    Depending on the candidate's location and circumstances, the interviews will either be conducted online using platforms like Zoom or Skype, or in person. Selected candidates will be notified of the interview date, the mode of interview, and any additional materials required for the interview.
