In entrepreneurship research, theory is king. In our leading journals, a manuscript that does not make a clear theoretical contribution rarely clears the editor's desk. That is understandable. Theory helps us organize ideas, identify important relationships, and develop explanations for entrepreneurial behavior in uncertain environments.
But if theory is king, the king needs a queen. In our field, that queen is rigorous empirical analysis.
