    Saturday, July 26 | 10:00–12:30 | Bella Center, Hall A – A1-m9

This PDW explores the growing prevalence and normalization of deception in entrepreneurship. From exaggerated promises to fabrications, deception is no longer the exception in entrepreneurship. It is often part of the playbook

The session brings together scholars to explore deceptive entrepreneurship from multiple perspectives, including framing, cultural norms, information systems, and misconduct.

    Confirmed presenters include:

    • Matthew Wood (Baylor University) – Foundations of deceptive entrepreneurship

    • Yuliya Snihur (Toulouse Business School) – When framing goes too far

    • Sean M. Dwyer (University of Oklahoma) – "Fake it till you make it" as cultural norm

    • Madeleine Meurer (Erasmus University) – Digital deception: platforms, virality, and collective discernment

    • Nelson Phillips (University of Denver) – Misconduct as corruption: expanding the lens on entrepreneurial wrongdoing

Additionally, the PDW will feature a special announcement of the upcoming Journal of Management Studies Special Issue on "The Dark Sides of Digital Communication", followed by interactive roundtable discussions focused on contemporary cases including WeWork, Theranos, Anna Delvey, and AI-enabled entrepreneurial deception.

An AOM 2025 registration is required but there is no need to pre-register for this session!
