Dear colleagues,
What is hype? How does it shape entrepreneurship? And why does it matter now more than ever?
Join us for a dynamic panel exploring the power and perils of hype in entrepreneurship, organized by Raghu Garud, Nelson Phillips, Charlene Zietsma, and myself. This session brings together leading scholars to unpack hype as a driving-but double-edged-force behind entrepreneurial ventures, particularly in emerging technologies.
From the meteoric rise and fall of Theranos to the booms and busts of crypto, NFTs, and virtual/augmented reality, hype plays a pivotal role in shaping expectations, attracting capital, and speeding startups to market. But how does it work? When is it productive, and when does it distort or deceive?
We'll tackle these questions and more in an engaging discussion on:
- How hype emerges and spreads
- Its impact on entrepreneurial legitimacy and resource mobilization
- Its broader consequences for innovation and society
📍 Monday, July 28 | 10:15–11:45 am | Bella Center, Hall B
📘 Co-sponsored by ENT, OMT, and TIM divisions
Panelists:
- Elena Dalpiaz (USI Lugano / Imperial)
- Matthew Grimes (Cambridge)
- Christian Hampel (Imperial)
- Danielle Logue (University of New South Wales)

We look forward to a thought-provoking session-and hope to see you there in Copenhagen!
