Dear Entrepreneurship Community,
I am pleased to announce that the 2nd annual conference dedicated to scholarly work on topics related to health and entrepreneurship will launch this October (13th and 14th) in Chicago, IL. The conference is purposely designed to be a small forum (capped at 50 people) where researchers can share their work in more detail with like-minded scholars and to foster collaborations for disseminating high quality research related to health in the process of new venture creation. We will also have two panels consisting of entrepreneurs, investors, insurance payers and providers, university program managers, and accelerators to discuss how we can advance work related to health in entrepreneurship. New sessions this year
We are excited to announce two new research methods focused sessions this year on longitudinal modeling (Led by Dr. Paul Bliese, USC) and a qualitative research seminar (Led by Sarah Burrows, Queen’s University). These two sessions would not be possible without the generous support of the Kauffman Foundation and from the University of North Texas.
We have a fantastic group of scholars this year to share their most recent work:
Marcus Wolfe, University of North Texas
Ute Stephan, King’s College London
Melissa Cardon, University of Tennessee-Knoxville
Mike Lerman, Iowa State University
Boris Nikolaev, Colorado State University
Jeff Gish, University of Central Florida
April Spivack, Hanken School of Economics
Tim Michaelis, Northern Illinois University
Maija Renjo, DePaul University
Jon Carr, North Carolina State University
The conference will be hosted in downtown Chicago, IL, at MATTER (https://matter.health/), a healthcare accelerator and incubator and at DePaul’s Coleman Center for Entrepreneurship (https://business.depaul.edu/about/centers-institutes/coleman-entrepreneurship-center/).
Doctoral Student Grants for Attendance. We are also very excited that through a generous gift we can cover travel costs for up to 6 doctoral students (domestic flights and hotel) who wish to attend this conference. The goal of this event is to connect you with senior researchers in the field, to provide you with advice on your research (methodological and theoretical), and to connect you with like-minded scholars who are interested in health-related research in entrepreneurship. For doctoral students interested in attending the conference, please send Tim Michaelis (tmichaelis@niu.edu) (1) a copy of your updated CV, (2) a 1 page description regarding your research interests related to health and entrepreneurship topics, and (3) optional – a writing sample, abstract, or draft of a research paper you are working on. The deadline for submitting these materials is June 30, 2023. Decisions made end of July.
For Faculty and Practitioners interested in attending this conference, please contact Tim Michaelis (tmichaelis@niu.edu). Space is limited (50 people), so please reach out soon! In your email, please let me know if you have research in progress related to health in entrepreneurship.
We have a small room block available this year at a first come first serve basis. The rooms are at the Holiday Inn Wolf Point, which is connected to the Day 1 conference event space at MATTER. Please click here to access the room block.
October is an amazing month to visit Chicago. We have great food planned for the event, a social event, and plenty of recommendations to enjoy the city once the conference ends on Saturday. We (Jon, Maija, and I) are looking forward to spending time with everyone in the Windy City!
All the best,
Tim
Note. This event is planned to be in person, but we are looking into organizing virtual sessions streamed through Zoom for those who can’t attend in person.
Note. Full vaccination for COVID-19 is required for this event (i.e., following CDC guidelines) and you will have to show proof of vaccination (register prior or upon arrival) to enter the MATTERs event space.
