What makes entrepreneurship so special is being able to draw from so many disciplines. It's where academics and practitioners still interact.

It's a shame to shut down a communication channel in an era where we need practitioners and academics interacting more.

I second Marks thoughts. It is very helpful to have an open line of access for non- academics, such as some of my staff, guest lecturers, clinical faculty and entrepreneurs I'm working with. Some of them find the discussions interesting and it helps them understand what we are about as Entrepreneurship researchers and educators. It would be a shame to lose that and close ourselves off further then we already have.

    Hi, All --

I, too, believe that a primary benefit of the listserv has been its accessibility to Division members and non-members alike.  I have often recommended the listserv as a "preview" to grad students who are debating whether to get involved with the Division.  So I hope that the AoM leadership will rethink the new policies.

But if good sense doesn't prevail at the Academy level, I hope that we can implement some sort of workaround within the Division, as Lou suggests.  Could we, for example, appoint a "pass through" moderator who would post messages on behalf of non-members and who would maintain a forwarding list for Daily Digests and push notifications?  I imagine that someone with the right e-mail skills could automate both these tasks via some combination of flags and filters.

    Best,
    Mark

    Dear colleagues,

As a naive non-member of the entrepreneurship division, since the AOM includes two divisional memberships as part of the basic fee, being a professor of strategy and international management, who conducts significant inter-disciplinary research, I have always checked strategy and international management for my divisional memberships.    That is with a belief and hope that just as I am contributing to the overall academy, members of the entrepreneurship division who may have cross-walking interests, will appreciate my membership in the academy, as opposed to rejecting my academy membership because of my affiliation with strategy and international management.

With this, if I may ask a dumb question - would the academy leaders be willing to share transparency index data on how many divisions they are members of, paying regular dues, and if they are not members of some divisions, is the privilege of interacting across divisions a privilege reserved only for those in power roles - and if yes, should we be rewriting our leadership textbooks and rejecting papers focusing on new leadership discourse from the Academy of Management journal, review, and perspectives?

    warmly,

Thank you John, Ted and Jeff,
As a (relatively) recent member of AoM and the ENTREP Division, I wanted to throw in my support of your sentiments. There is a lot of interesting interaction in this Division and its listserve, and I don't see any good reason why that same broad level of interaction can't continue through this new Connect@AOM implementation. What the AoM administration may or may not understand is that the high level of accessibility and interaction that our listserve provides IS THE VALUE that we receive from this member benefit. Jeff, please share our sentiments with your colleagues at AoM and make sure they understand that by stripping out the diverse interaction we receive from this member benefit, they will be reducing the level of perceived value we receive from our participation and membership.
    Kind regards,
    Amy

I have just learned that the Entrep@aomlists.aom.org is going to transform to the Connect platform next month.     The Entrepreneurship Listserve was created in the 1990s with no barriers to membership.  To join, all you had to have was an interest in Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship scholarship, or Entrepreneurship education.   That was an intentional strategy that I believe helped to introduce many scholars to the Academy of Management and to our Division.   I believe that it was also a successful idea and contributed to the success of our Division recruiting efforts.

Quite frankly, I am sorry to see the change of the list into a space where only members of the Division will have full participation rights.    I know that times change and many marketing gurus believe that  such a 'new' philosophy of exclusivity will add perceived value to membership but I really do not believe this.

Rather, I believe that it will shut out many of the past participants in fruitful discussions,  scholars from different fields of study where Entrepreneurship is needed and relevant (e.g. the creative arts community), from other levels of academia and Ent Support (community colleges,  SBA and SBDC communities, etc.) and from actual participation by ENTREPRENEURS who have an interest in Entrep. Education and Theory.

Old dogs often bemoan the passing of something that they helped to create and I am wary of falling into that stereotype, BUT I want everyone to pause and think.  Do we really want to create barriers to participating in our exciting community?

I became an active member of our Division as a Ph.D. Student predominately because the Division was so welcoming to anyone with an interest in Entrepreneurship.   It did not matter what school you taught at, where your degrees were from or who you worked with.    It did not matter whether you published in top tier journals, or other outlets, or even had much of a scholarship record at all or whether you had a recognized "name."   You were welcomed into the tribe and mentored.  Senior scholars visited with you with real interest and encouraged what we might now recognize as the entrepreneurial mindset -- hey, what are YOU interested in?  Wow, that fascinating!  Lets do something together, or here is who you should talk to....   I want to see that tradition continue:)

The Connect Platform is definitely a value added technology compared to the decades old listserve tech but why can't it be an OPEN community which welcomes all who are interested in participating and where the advantages of AOM and Division membership can be DEMONSTRATED through engagement?   This philosophy served the Division well for over 20 years.    Please consider continuing that strategy.

    Hi all,

We write to share the exciting news that the ENTREP Listserv will be changing soon. It is scheduled to be upgraded to Connect@AOM next month, December 2017.

Connect@AOM is a new online collaborative tool, designed exclusively for AOM members. This platform dramatically improves the networking tools available to ENT Division members and helps us connect and collaborate with each other. We hope you will find it to be a place where you can ask for advice, share your experiences, and build relationships.

Here is what you need to do now to get ready:

    1. Make sure you have you preferred/current email listed on your profile with AOM.  Go to Aom.Org, sign in and you can check your profile by clicking "My Profile" in the box in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Please update your profile and make sure we have your current and correct email address listed.

    2. Make sure you are a member of the division.  While any member of AOM can view the content of the our Community, only ENT Division members will be able to post to the discussions. So, put differently, Connect@AOM is a member benefit. While non-members may create an account and view Connect@AOM activity, the privilege of posting to and participating in the community is restricted to ENT Division members. Additionally, only ENT community members will be eligible to receive Daily Digest or other push notifications about activity that occurs in the ENT community.

We will be sharing more information about this transition over the next two weeks. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email Lou Marino who is our Communications Committee Chair at lmarino@cba.ua.edu.

    Best regards,

Jeff Pollack, Listserv Moderator, Entrepreneurship Division

Lou Marino, Communications Committee Chair, Entrepreneurship Division
