"One Ring to Rule Them All' - how did THAT work out? :)
We've had some good discussions on the listserv (including the one where I got asked if I thought I was God, LOL) and the volume of posts was low enough to not be overwhelming. However, the greatest discussions I've had online were on Facebook. I remember a ~4 day* rolling discussion on experiential entrep ed & assessing impact that kept going as scholars across the world chimed in along with entrepreneurs, policymakers and, yes, even real educators :) Man, that was a blast. On FB**, your friends will see your posts and a few did chime in on the discussion (as in "geez, what the heck are you talking out?" AND "hey, you guys know your stuff"). We'll never get that on AomConnect, I fear... I've had delightful discussions on Twitter where I could engage with global colleagues (e.g., the recent RENT conference). I'd rather chat with you all on SoMe... and listservs are kinda clunky.
I'm not sure we NEED AomConnect... unless we can use it to our advantage. In Atlanta, Lou told us that we can be flexible with permissions? Make it more like an old-school message board -we can have insider-only threads where confidentiality matters (no idea what those might be, tbh) Or maybe we code the API so all of our threads export from (and import to) another vehicle like a listserv/message board/etc.?? Lou, can we have chat rooms for specialized discussions that don't bore everyone else (or for necessarily private chats like the Awards Cmte)?
Demonic idea #1: ENT goes freemium & adds an Honorary Member category (price = no lurking, must contribute). That slices the Gordian Knot?
Lou also suggested (?) that we can make it easy to cross-talk with other Divisions... but make no mistake, AoM wants to own/control all of this. Possibly for good reasons. Or bad (run amok PC, monetizing further... I can fully imagine AoM devising a "premium" membership - you know they've thought about it, LOL)
ENT is a guinea pig for a reason - we are demonically clever*** and if they embrace that, we can do a big service to AoM as a whole. Also, Lou M is the right guy to lead this despite his shameless support of the SEC :)
Anyway... my mentor, the amazing Al Shapero, liked to say "No matter how you design a system, smart humans will make it work anyway!" :)
See you on Facebook (and Twitter and LinkedIn) - will accept friend requests on all 3. I suspect that no matter what happens, those great discussions will keep happening on FB!****
I love you all!
* that was nuts and seems to happen a couple times a year... and one of those 4 days was my birthday! ;)
** not the FB group, alas... we are not good at using that or Linkedin.
*** think Tom Ellis [bonus pts if you get that ;) ]
**** and if you fear FB clutter, try the SocialFixer extension...
