    PROFILE of the UNIVERSITY
UNLV is a doctoral-degree-granting institution of approximately 29,000 students and more than 3,000 faculty and staff that is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a research university with high research activity. UNLV offers a broad range of respected academic programs and is on a path to join the top tier of national public research universities. The university is committed to recruiting and retaining top students and faculty, educating the region's diversifying population and workforce, driving economic activity through increased research and community partnerships, and creating an academic health center for Southern Nevada that includes the launch of a new UNLV School of Medicine. THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP ECOSYSTEM: Consistent with its distinction as a city that continually reinvents itself, Las Vegas has developed a vibrant entrepreneurship community. For instance, Switch Communications, which runs the world's largest and most powerful data center and technology ecosystem, has created the Innevation Center to foster technological innovation in Nevada. The Downtown Project continues to develop the downtown area infrastructure, and provides seed funding for startups and small businesses. Supporting its reputation as a world leader in tourism, in 2016 over 42 million people visited Las Vegas, and over six million delegates attended over 21 thousand conventions, including the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which hosted an astounding 177,393 visitors. Given its vibrant hospitality and construction sectors, and other recent initiatives including the creation of a downtown Innovation District, Las Vegas provides an unparalleled environment for individuals interested in entrepreneurship/innovation research and practice. With no state tax, many opportunities for tax breaks, and a designation as one of the top states in which to incorporate, Nevada is also an ideal place to launch new ventures.

LIVING IN LAS VEGAS: Faculty members generally live in thriving Las Vegas master-planned communities known for their beautiful parks, miles of jogging and bike trails, and more sunshine than almost any other city in the United States. Food, shopping, and entertainment opportunities are unmatched; yet, residents enjoy a relatively low cost of living compared to other major cities such as San Francisco, Boston, or New York. Las Vegas is near the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Mount Charleston, and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and within comfortable driving distances of other metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City. Attractions such as Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell, and the Grand Canyon are within easy driving distances as well.
