  • 1.  New Emerging Scholars Award ENT Division of AOM

    Posted 10-26-2017 15:03

    Hi Jeff,

Please post this information about the exciting new Emerging Scholars Awards!  Thanks

    Emerging Scholars Award

    Entrepreneurship Division, Academy of Management

The Emerging Scholars Award is part of an overall strategic initiative by the Entrepreneurship (ENT) Division of the Academy of Management (AOM) to encourage, reward, and provide research support for Emerging Scholars of the Entrepreneurship Division.  The impetus for this initiative was the most recent AOM Survey, which indicated that emerging scholars are a large percentage of our membership and research considerations were important reasons for membership in the ENT Division.

The Emerging Scholars Award consists of a $1500 stipend (thanks to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation), recognition, visibility, and mentorship at AOM and through the NewsBlast, AOM Connect, and links to personal webpages and publications.  Each year the division may present up to three Emerging Scholars Awards to deserving individuals.

The award winners will demonstrate an emerging record of scholarship that has the potential to make innovative and impactful contributions to the body of entrepreneurship research.  The winners will be recognized and asked to present a short summary of their work at the Academy of Management Meeting.

    Eligibility:

o    Eligible candidates must have received a Ph.D. (or equivalent doctoral degree) between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2017.

o    Must be a member of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management.

    Submission Guidelines:

Applications may consist of self-nominations or nominations from others in the field, but for full consideration applications must include the following:

o    A research statement (no longer than two single spaced pages) demonstrating how the applicant's previous work, work in progress, and future research goals have the potential to make significant innovative and impactful contributions to the body of entrepreneurship research.

If necessary, the research committee reviewers will contact applicants for additional materials.

    Deadline:

For full consideration, applications must be received by January 31, 2018.  For more information, please contact Dawn DeTienne at cob_ent@Mail.colostate.edu.  Please submit applications to cob_ent@Mail.colostate.edu with the Subject line "Emerging Scholars".

From the same eCorner collection, I love Jessica Flannery (now Jackley) founder of Kiva. Her story about social enterprise, although a bit old, is very motivating for millennials.

I couldn't find them searching eCorner website. These ones may be part of the subscription collection, but possibly worth the investment if you want to use videos regularly in class (disclaimer – I have no affiliation with Stanford)

I did find this Ted talk by Jessica – too long for your current purpose – but worth considering using in some way.

    Hi Srini,

I've have used this video featuring Dr. K! It is always inspiring...

Also, I like this activity...it shows that if you only do what is asked you'll focus too much and miss amazing opportunities (like a moonwalking bear).

    Hi Srini,

This may not be for your first meeting with them, but if eventually you go into topics like entrepreneurial bricolage, pros and cons of business planning, how to structure the start-up process, and pros and cons of rapid growth, there is a series of 3-7 minute sketchbook videos here for free use.

Here is another example, covering effectuation and possible suitable for your first meeting:
