    Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship

    California Lutheran University

    Background:

California Lutheran University invites applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship, beginning in the Fall of 2018. We recently became a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and are especially interested in candidates who can demonstrate commitment to and success working in diverse, multi-cultural and multi-racial communities. We encourage applicants from all faiths and advocate for justice and fairness for all people. Cal Lutheran is an accredited, private, comprehensive university that engages students in critical inquiry and is dedicated to educating leaders for a global society. Located midway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, our 290-acre campus is home to more than 2,800 undergraduate and 1,350 graduate students who come from 61 countries and represent a variety of faiths. Approximately half of Cal Lutheran students are international students or from underrepresented groups.

Started in 2014, the Cal Lutheran Center for Entrepreneurship is dedicated to the study of entrepreneurship within the context of the liberal and fine arts. The Center offers an undergraduate entrepreneurship concentration for business majors and an entrepreneurship minor for majors in the arts, humanities and sciences. All students take courses together to foster an interdisciplinary atmosphere. The Center offers a complete curriculum for graduate management students who are interested in entrepreneurship as a career or as a means for stimulating enterprise innovation. The Center encourages extra-curricular student involvement, including a vibrant entrepreneurship club and a university-wide New Venture Competition. The Center hosts a monthly Entrepreneur Speaker Series and is a frequent organizer and sponsor of regional Startup Weekends, hackathons and startup community events.

Cal Lutheran's location is ideal for the study of entrepreneurship. Vibrant startup communities in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara are within an hour's drive. Most other Southern California startup communities in Orange County, San Diego and San Luis Obispo are within driving distance, and Silicon Valley is a short airplane ride away.

The Center operates its own community coworking space, Hub101, at a satellite campus in Westlake Village. With more than 150 members, Hub101 hosts many of the region's notable startups, some of which are venture-backed. Hub101 has become a startup community hub north of Los Angeles and is host to all types of entrepreneurship-focused events. Hub101 is run by student interns under the supervision of a full-time Cal Lutheran staff member. Cal Lutheran students also find internships and mentors at Hub101 and use it as a base for their own startups.

The Center embraces Cal Lutheran's commitment to diversity and recognizes that this is a particular challenge with startups and venture capitalists, which have a reputation for ignoring or denying that there's a problem. We would like to be a voice for change through our students and position in the community.

    Position:

The successful candidate will bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the position but be sensitive to the unique challenges of growing a community-dependent program inside a university. This position will have a full teaching load and will be expected to play a key role in shaping curricula, both graduate and undergraduate, that are innovative and exemplary. We expect this candidate to share our belief that experience outside the classroom is an essential element of an entrepreneurship education.

We believe that the academic study of entrepreneurship is still in its infancy and are seeking a candidate who is willing to stretch the bounds of current research. We expect the candidate to share our passion for the relationship between entrepreneurship and the liberal arts and have a position how each can benefit from the other.

The Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship is a critical role in a growing and ambitious program. It is the only tenure track position in the Center. This candidate will be a linchpin of the Center, serving as its representative and ambassador among ladder faculty.

    •             Either proven or presumptive potential for satisfactorily fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a faculty member and for making significant contributions to the University community.

    •             Familiarity with and experience teaching entrepreneurship education techniques, specifically Lean Launchpad (Blank, Stanford and UC Berkeley) and Disciplined Entrepreneurship (Aulet, MIT).
