Exposure Trips to explore Business & Entrepreneurship in Poverty Alleviation – Cape Town, South Africa
Abstract
We would like to invite international students & faculty to dig deeper into the challenges of addressing poverty, through business and entrepreneurship. This week-long field trip in Cape Town will require engaging with real people and their stories. Local hero's using business as a tool for enabling the poorest of the poor.
Question your assumptions and challenge your thinking around the arguments of charity and business.
Spending a week in a country where 40% of people live on the level of desperate poverty (<$1.25/day); with one of the highest levels of HIV-AIDS, and one of the highest levels of inequality in the world, South Africa sadly makes for an excellent setting for this study.
This programme relies heavily on active small group discussion with locals passionate about self-upliftment. This programme may be customised, in order to form part of wider fields of study (outside of business and economics) including for example, governance, history, justice, social development, and environmental management.
The trip will be hosted by Epic Solutions (www.epicsolutions.org.za) - a Non-Profit organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa - who have taken an innovative approach to providing business training at the grass roots level in communities. Epic Solutions is committed to empowerment, providing long term trainee support that is focused on enabling successful business establishment. The Epic Solutions programme has expanded into 26 countries has a network of around 50 trainers and had over 2000 graduates since its founding in 2006.
