With apologies for cross-posting.
Dear colleagues,
We invite submissions for abstracts to the International QCA Young Researcher Workshop 2017 (ETH Zurich, 12 December 2017). The workshop provides a unique platform for young researchers using QCA to meet QCA experts, get feedback on their on-going research, and learn about the latest methodological developments in QCA. The workshop is interdisciplinary and interactive and allows for in-depth discussions and individual feedback from internationally renowned QCA scholars. We invite submission of abstracts from doctoral and post-doctoral students applying QCA in various fields of research (e.g., sociology, political science, management, evaluation studies, international relations, medicine, and health) as well as policy and business consultants using QCA in their work. If you’re uncertain whether you belong to one of the two groups, please contact us.
The workshop faculty includes internationally renowned QCA scholars from various disciplines with substantive experience in using, developing, and teaching QCA:
• Barbara Befani, Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity, University of Surrey
• Peer Fiss, Marshall Business School, University of Southern California
• Charles Ragin, Dept. of Sociology, University of California Irvine
• Carsten Schneider, Dept. of Political Science, Central European University
• Eva Thomann, Dept. of Politics, University of Exeter
• Benoît Rihoux, School of Political Sciences, Université Catholique de Louvain
• Bart Cambré, Antwerp Management School, University of Antwerp
• Santi Furnari, Cass Business School, City University of London
• Claude Rubinson, Dept. of Social Sciences, University of Houston-Downtown
• Lesley Watson, American Cancer Society, Atlanta
Preliminary Workshop Program
The program of the International QCA Young Researcher Workshop primarily consists of roundtable forums for participants to receive detailed feedback from QCA experts on their ongoing research projects. The roundtable forums will take place in small groups with approximately two QCA experts and three to four participants to allow for in-depth discussions. The workshop program will also include two focused sessions. The first session will provide participants with an overview of software packages for conducting QCA analysis and will include opportunities to ask software-related questions and to make suggestions for future software developments. The second session will provide participants with practical insights for using QCA in policy work and business consulting. We will round up the workshop with a keynote speech from an established QCA scholar including drinks to interact and socialize.
Submission Procedure and Schedule
To participate in the workshop, please submit an extended abstract of 1,000-1,500 words to jmeuer@ethz.ch by September 18, 2017. Your abstract should summarize your study’s topical area, theoretical background, research gap and question, and include details about the data, analytical strategy (for empirical papers), and preliminary results. A panel of QCA experts will review all submissions and evaluate their fit with the workshop according to clarity of purpose, methodological rigor, and innovative character of the research. We will notify applicants no later than October 23, 2017 about opportunities to participate.
Hosting and Venue
The International QCA Young Researcher Workshop will take place at ETH Zurich. The workshop is hosted jointly by ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), the University of Bern, the University of Wuppertal, and the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL).
Workshop Fees
Participation in the workshop is free of charge. We will provide coffee, tea, and snacks during breaks. Participants will need to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses. We will provide a limited number of hotel rooms at a discounted price and are happy to help find suitable accommodation.
The International QCA Young Researcher Workshop is an extension of the 5th International QCA Expert Workshop, which will take place after the Young Researcher Workshop. The 5th International QCA Expert Workshop (ETH Zurich, 13-14 December 2017) provides a venue for experienced QCA researchers to discuss the latest and most important developments around QCA. The workshop focuses exclusively on methodological and conceptual advances around QCA, not on applications of QCA in empirical research. All participants are expected to actively participate in the program. In order to allow for active participation among researchers with diverse academic backgrounds, the number of participants is limited. If you’re working on a project which you think might fit to the workshop, please contact jmeuer@ethz.ch.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to your submission!
