Track title: Emotions and cognitions of entrepreneurs:
Origins and consequences
Track summary
Recently entrepreneurship researchers have emphasized the increasingly important role that entrepreneurial cognitions and emotions play in entrepreneurial behaviors, and consequently their effectiveness. However, although research output in the field has significantly increased, an evident lack of theoretical integration of entrepreneurial emotions and cognitions has been identified (See for example Mitchell et al., 2007). Entrepreneurial cognitions and emotions are not only important drivers of inner self centered entrepreneurial behaviors but are also determinants of relationships that an entrepreneur establishes with other stakeholders of the venture. As such, entrepreneurial cognitions and emotions are contagious to meaningful others of the venture. Underlying mechanisms through which emotions and cognitions interplay in entrepreneurship opportunity exploration and exploitation activities are not yet known. The entrepreneurship field currently lacks a conceptual framework to establish the scope, theoretical grounding, constructs, and measures in studying entrepreneurial cognitions and emotions.
The benefits of such a systematic approach to studying entrepreneurial emotions and cognitions have strategic and operational considerations. Strategically, through exploring and understanding the conceptual space, we can approach and develop research in an additive fashion. Operationally, we can then conceive how to effectively define, model, measure, and examine the phenomena of interest.
The focus of this track is on different research papers that talk about what entrepreneurial emotions and cognitions are, and what they do during the entrepreneurial process. The intention of the track is not only to flesh out different research perspectives, but more importantly to have an active discussion with authors contributing to the track as well as interested audience members on this important research topic as to better understand how we can collectively, as a field, move this stream of research forward.
Thus, the papers submitted and accepted to this track may serve as a means of guiding, informing, and improving the current research process by addressing several key questions, such as:
· What are the key emotions and cognitions that impact entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship?
· What are origins of entrepreneurial emotions and cognitions? What is the impact on its occurrence by stable characteristics of entrepreneurs and which are more dependent on the current situation?
· How do emotions and cognitions of entrepreneurs change through the life cycle of the venture?
· How do emotions impact cognitions and vice versa throughout the entrepreneurial process?
· What is the relation between cognitive biases and entrepreneurial emotions?
· How do short-term episodic emotions and long-term enduring emotions interact and how does this interaction affect entrepreneurial cognitions, behaviors, or outcomes?
