Hi Reg:
There are some studies that may be relevant, in the realm of assessing
the economic impact of university technology transfer. You might want
to look at these MIT-based studies:
Two non-academic studies
BankBoston. 1997. MIT: The Impact of Innovation. Special Report of the
BankBoston Economics Department. Retrieved 1/15, 2004, from
http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/founders/
Pressman, Lori, Sonia K. Gutterman, Irene Abrams, David E. Geist, and
Lita Nelsen, "Pre-Production Investment and Jobs Induced by MIT
Exclusive Patent Licenses: A Preliminary Model to Measure the Economic
Impact of University Licensing. Journal of the Association of University
Technology
Managers, 1995, Volume VII: 49-82.
and Scott Shane has published several articles based on the MIT
experience, although these are obviously addressing broader research
questions:
Shane, Scott (2002). Selling University Technology: Patterns From MIT.
Management Science,
48(1), 122-138.
Shane, Scott and Stuart, Toby. (2002). Organizational Endowments and the
Performance of University Start-ups. Management Science 48(1), 154-171.
Best regards,
Don

Subject: [ENTREP] Request for help on assessing a university's
"entrepreneurial contribution"
I am interested in carrying out a survey of our university's grads from
the past couple decades, and across all disciplines, in order to assess
our university's "entrepreneurial contribution" to our city and province
(e.g., number of start-ups, employees, industry domains, etc.). Can
anyone direct me to any studies, projects, surveys, etc. of this nature
that be useful in planning such a study? Please send your responses to
rlitz@cc.umanitoba.ca. Thank you.
