Topic: AOM PDW: Interactions between alliances and acquisitions
Date & time: Saturday, August 5 at 10.30am-1pm
Location: Hyatt Regency Atlanta (Hanover Hall E)
Are you conducting research that examines the link between strategic alliances and M&A or simply interested in learning more? Then join us for this PDW on the topic at the upcoming Atlanta AOM meetings.
Description:
While there are large bodies of literature on alliances and acquisitions, there is little research that explores the connection between the two. The small body of work on the topic suggest there are important and complex interactions between alliances and acquisitions. Because alliances and acquisitions are alternative modes of corporate development, they are substitutes. In contrast, because the formation of an alliance between two firms can increase the likelihood one partner acquires the other, alliances can complement acquisitions. Moreover, a firm's experience with one mode can impact the likelihood and success with the other. Finally, a firm's position in a network of alliances can influence its likelihood of acquisition and the choice of target. This PDW will explore when and how alliances and acquisitions can complement and substitute for one another and aims to gather scholars at all career stages from diverse AOM home divisions that share an interest in this topic.
Presentations:
The workshop will open with four presentations on various aspects of the interaction between alliances and acquisitions by the following scholars:
- Dovev Lavie (Technion)
- Exequiel Hernandez (Wharton)
- Linda Rademaker (BI Norwegian Business School)
- Aneta Oleksiak (U. of Groningen)
- Panos Desyllas (U. of Bath)
This part of the PDW will last about 90 minutes and is open to everyone without registration.
