Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina,
Appalachian State University has built a national reputation for providing
outstanding academic programs. Appalachian, a member institution of the
sixteen-campus University of North Carolina system, is consistently
recognized as a leading comprehensive, regional university in annual U.S.
News and World Report surveys. With a 17:1 student/faculty ratio, faculty
members are able to take a personal interest in student progress. The
University is steadily growing and currently has approximately 15,100
students, primarily in bachelor’s and master’s programs in both liberal arts
and applied fields. Appalachian has both a traditional residential campus
and a variety of distance education programs, with faculty committed to
    teaching, scholarship and service.

The university is located in Boone, North Carolina, a small town (year-round
population of 15,000) which thrives as one of the Southeast's premier
tourism and outdoor recreation destinations. At 3,333 feet, Boone is the
highest city of its size (over 10,000) east of the Mississippi River. Boone
has mild summers, a dramatic leaf season, and winter snows with nearby
skiing. The nearby Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest provide a
beautiful natural setting with extensive possibilities for outdoor
adventure. Live in one of National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “50 Top
    Adventure Towns.”
