Hi Veronika:
You might also wish to explore somewhat the emerging entrepreneurial cognition stream of research, which begins to situate within the literature the "innate"-type characteristics contritubtions, the "bias or heuristic"-type explanations, the approaches that examine "skills, attributes, and expertise that can be obtained through deliberate practice," and so on.
Based on my interest in this question, and some editorial work for the ET&P series on entrepreneurial cognition (2002, 2004, 2007) I have come to see entrepreneurial characteristics as only part of an explanation that also includes the integration of the "software"-type influences of knowledge bases and problem solving skills that can be acquired through deliberate practice, with the more "hard-wired" characteristics-based explanations.
A good summary of the entrepreneurial cognition lens is our Editors' article in this year's volume:
Mitchell, R. K., Busenitz, L., Bird, B., Gaglio, C. M., McMullen, J., Morse, E., Smith, B. (2007). The central question in entrepreneurial cognition research 2007. Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, (January 2007): 1-27.
Also, a great taxonomy that integrates characteristics/ personality factors with social and information factors through deliberate practice is provided in the following (Figure 2.1 p. 53):
Charness, N., Krampe, R., & Mayer, U. 1996. The role of practice and coaching in entrepreneurial skill domains: An international comparison of life-span chess skill acquisition. In K. A. Ericsson (Ed.), The road to excellence: The acquisition of expert performance in the arts and sciences, sports, and games: 51-80. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates.
I hope these might be helpful.
Ron
