Below is an announcement for a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) at
this year's Academy of Management. We hope to see you there!

Empirical Tests of Complex Systems Leadership Theory
Professional Development Workshop (PDW)
Academy of Management Annual Meeting
Saturday, August 4, 2007 from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm
Room 105B Convention Center, Philadelphia, PA
Overview of the Workshop
-----------------------------
The complex systems paradigm has become pervasive in organization science
and management. The field of leadership studies, however, has been slower
to adopt the paradigm because it has been difficult to design empirical
studies that would test its usefulness in the leadership arena. At this PDW
we will explore ways to further research in this area at all levels of
analysis. In particular, we will suggest that research focus on clarifying
and specifying the terms and concepts unique to complexity. In so doing we
hope to forge a common language of complex systems leadership theory that is
grounded in empirical results. The purpose of the overall dialogue will be
to identify the types of questions most appropriate for analysis of complex
systems leadership and ways these questions can be explored empirically. All
participants, whether senior faculty or graduate students, should come away
with new ideas for using computational, qualitative and quantitative methods
to explore research questions unique to the complexity framing of
leadership.
The Panel
------------
The panel includes prominent scholars representing leadership and complexity
science as well as different methodological approaches, including agent
based modeling and dynamic network analysis. Several of the panelists have
recently edited books and journal special issues on the subject of
complexity and leadership. Mary Uhl-Bien and Russ Marion wrote one of the
earliest papers that linked complex systems thinking to leadership and Dr.
Marion is the author of The Edge of Organization: Chaos and Complexity
Theories of Formal Social Organizations (Sage). Jeffrey Goldstein is a
pioneer in the subject of complexity, and has written extensively about many
aspects of complexity including leadership. Kevin Dooley has published
foundational papers on the subject of complexity science in organizations,
including the use textual analysis as method in empirical complexity
research. Gita Surie brings an international entrepreneurship flavor to the
topic on complexity leadership. She has compiled extensive case studies in
India and published articles in the area. Finally, Craig Schreiber has
recently joined the Army Research Laboratories from Carnegie Mellon
University. He has applied dynamic network analysis to leadership questions
and is expert in social networks and agent based modeling techniques. The
panel will be facilitated by Jim Hazy who has published several papers and
book chapters and is editing two books on the subject. Taken together, this
panel represents a range of philosophical as well as methodological
approaches and perspectives.
