    Special Issue Purpose
The objective of the special issue is to promote research on how trends related to globalization, circular economy, digitalization and servitization influence new perspectives toward innovative inter-organizational networks and sustainability.

    Background
Increasing environmental concerns and new perspectives on consumption require companies to adapt and organize in new ways to solve large-scale complex problems. Among the areas of attention are new and innovative ways to reduce environmental effects through assuming life-cycle responsibility, improving operation, developing new product-services, and pursuing alternative ways to accomplish more effective consumption. In many cases, new ways of working and organization are required not from a firm but rather an inter-organizational network perspective to develop inclusive solutions. Through inter-organizational networks, greater opportunities for advanced innovation, improved service delivery, distributed risks, shared accountability, and new business models are possible. Inter-organizational networks ensure a broader set of resources and increased capacity, in which multiple organizations and institutions join to bring different knowledge and skills to meet complex challenges.
Recent research has shown that the types, forms and structures of inter-organizational networks must be revised in order to capitalize on new trends and opportunities. Various studies have acknowledged the decreased degree of stability due to chaotic and difficult-to-plan knowledge needs and the heightened competition and dynamism inherent in globalization. Given the recognized role of virtual collaboration and the formation of distant relationships, accomplished through the use of technology, the role and form of networks look significantly different today compared to those of the mid-1990s. For example, the literature delineates an increased need for openness and inclusion, since extranet and collaboration with open and inclusive networks facilitate impressive innovation and technology development. Even the conditions for traditional closed restricted exclusive network forms, which are often designed by a focal firm and tightly controlled, have changed. Overall, we clearly see a decreased possibility of governing networks and that we need further understanding of how to establish and organize networks to ensure that the actors involved can effectively join forces with clear intentions to collaborate in implementing sustainable solutions.
By exploring new ways of organizing and innovative ways to manage challenges, we observe that innovative networks can be formed in both short- and long-term arrangements, they may not only involve individual firms, and they can also involve communities or surrounding stakeholders.

    Research Questions

The special issue seeks new perspectives on networks. Although this list is not exclusive in any way, we believe that the following questions include issues that could be addressed:
    •    Influencing role of emerging trends for innovative inter-organizational networks
    •    Importance of innovation and entrepreneurial actions
    •    Development of circular economy and new types of ecosystems
    •    Governance models (e.g. trust or control based) for inter-organizational networks
    •    Relationship management – strong and weak ties
    •    Service innovation within the inter-organizational network for sustainability
    •    Co-creation models among entrepreneurial firms for sustainability
    •    Role of networks in the sustainable economy

    Important dates:
    •    Manuscript submission deadline: 15th August, 2017
    •    Feedback on manuscripts (acceptance/revision/rejection): 15th December, 2017
