    Posted 02-15-2017 17:43

    Dear Colleagues,

I am revising the curriculum of our Master's Degree, which has four Entrepreneurship subjects:

    Entrepreneurship

New Venture Creation (Spinelli & Adams)

    International Business

    Franchising

Right now I am looking for a good text book at the Masters level for Entrepreneurship. (preferably 2012 or later)

Our undergrad Entrepreneurship subject is using Kurato, which is a hard act to follow!

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Roxanne

    Roxanne:

For graduate-level first courses, lots of schools use The New Business Road Test 4e (2013), and use the course to have the students empirically assess the feasibility of a new venture idea, and then present their conclusion to a panel of investors (go or no-go, with good marks for either result, done well). This makes them get out of the building and actually do stuff that entrepreneurs must learn to do, not just listen to stuff. It's a trade book, not a textbook, so it's much cheaper and much more readable for students. The ideas found to be feasible can then feed into the New Venture Creation business plan course, generating better work there, too. More at http://www.newbusinessroadtest.com/.

    Roxanne,

While admittedly a shameless self-serving plug, it's possible my book The Seen, the Unseen, and the Unrealized: How Regulations Affect Our Everyday Lives (Lexington) from 2016 might be a fit. It is not an entrepreneurship how-to guide, but explains the economy (its dynamic and development) in terms of entrepreneurship. Despite the publisher's preferred subtitle, it is more focused on the market-economic system as entrepreneurially driven than the effects of regulation (the last couple of chapters are on how regulations affect entrepreneurship). It was written for upperclassmen and master-level students to provide them with a framework for understanding the dynamics and economics of entrepreneurship, so it might fit better in a theory class than in a start-your-own-business type of hands-on.

    Roxanne,

If you want to take a mindset approach in the intro to entrepreneurship course, then I suggest my new textbook from Sage called Entrepreneurship: The Practice & Mindset (2017)

    From the publisher's material:

Entrepreneurship: The Practice and Mindset catapults students beyond the classroom by helping them develop an entrepreneurial mindset so they can create opportunities and take action in uncertain environments. Based on the world-renowned Babson Entrepreneurship program, this new text emphasizes practice and learning through action. Students learn entrepreneurship by taking small actions and interacting with stakeholders in order to get feedback, experiment, and move ideas forward.  Students walk away from this text with the entrepreneurial mindset, skillset, and toolset that can be applied to startups as well as organizations of all kinds. Whether your students have backgrounds in business, liberal arts, engineering, or the sciences, this text will take them on a transformative journey.

    Sorry about the shameless plug!

    Roxanne -

I am admittedly an anti-textbook guy, because I think it is better to put the focus on doing from day 1. I have been using the FOCUS Framework with fantastic results - it does a great job of getting from idea/problem to product-market fit in a very intuitive and very experiential manner. It's cheaper than textbooks and much easier for an instructor to translate into action. Happy to make an intro to the author if you (or anyone on this listserve) would like - Justin does a great job of customizing it for particular curriculum.

    Roxanne -

It all depends on your ultimate goal. Do you want students to learn about entrepreneurship / startup, or do you want your students to practice entrepreneurship / startup, or some combination of both? Either is challenging. As I mentioned earlier, I want students to learn by doing, and with no offense to textbook authors, I have yet to see a more traditional textbook that does a good job of enabling faculty to responsibly and accurately get students learning by doing.

I experiment every semester (practicing what I preach, treating my classroom like a startup), and have found success using a variety of tools. Alex Bruton (The Innographer), VentureBlocks simulation, All In Startup book are phenomenal tools that lead into business modeling.

Justin Wilcox's FOCUS Framework is a great lead-in to Ash Maurya's resources for applying lean startup (including Running Lean and Scaling Lean books).

I'm always happy to hop on a call to talk more about what you're up to and provide my two cents (or four!)

    Dear Doan,

    Awesome!

This has raised a question for my curriculum development, do I want a textbook or a workbook?

Thank you for the offer to put me in contact with the author, I would appreciate that.

    Cheers,

    Roxanne

I am admittedly an anti-textbook guy, because I think it is better to put the focus on doing from day 1. I have been using the FOCUS Framework with fantastic results - it does a great job of getting from idea/problem to product-market fit in a very intuitive and very experiential manner. It's cheaper than textbooks and much easier for an instructor to translate into action. Happy to make an intro to the author if you (or anyone on this listserve) would like - Justin does a great job of customizing it for particular curriculum.

    Dear Heidi,

Others have mentioned this privately but I am glad you make sure it got on my list!

I taught Self Leadership and Positive Psychology and I appreciate Christopher's work in this area as highly relevant to entrepreneurship!
