  • 1.  FYI: Journal Rankings

I get asked occasionally about journal rankings in entrepreneurship, and I thought I'd share the quick, dirty but highly satisfying answer. The most complete journal ranking comes from the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">UK</st1:country-region></st1:place>'s Association of Business Schools, at http://www.the-abs.org.uk/?id=257. They offer a listing by "field and rank" available from the above URL which has a listing (and ranking) of 24 journals in "Entrepreneurship and Small Business". There are three neat aspects: (1) the ranking is based on a very complete methodology, which is fully documented, (2) rankings are provided for journals in other disciplines, so cross disciplinary comparisons of journal quality are possible, and (3) Not every discipline has top-tier (rank 4 in their parlance) journals, which shows there is discriminating power. I think the ENT/SB listing makes a lot of sense and "travels well", although some other lists (like IB in particular) look markedly different from what we are used to seeing in <st1:place w:st="on">North America</st1:place>. I'd be curious what folks think of the ABS list rankings.

Next to that, Anne-Wil Harzing's Journal Quality List http://www.harzing.com/ is the most complete coverage of journal rankings, and she also has a version by discipline. Anne-Wil does not offer a summative ranking, but provides a very complete listing of others' rankings. BTW, Harzing's Publish or Perish software provides a free and fascinating way to look at journal and author impact. It uses Google Scholar (vs. ISI's Journal Impact Ratings), and offers the latest stats for assessing impact. She also provides some interesting papers on the in's and out's of rankings and journal impact statistics. When these issues are heavy on your mind, she makes for good reading.

As you say, there is a strong element of 'face validity' about the ABS
ranking in the entrepreneurship area, but I am less convinced that there
is, in fact, much cross-field comparability in rankings: indeed, the
efforts to determine what is the 'best' journal is subject to the
meta-rankings of field status, such that, for example, 'top' journals in
the strategy or OB/OT areas (for example) will be viewed as 'better' than
equivalently-ranked entrepreneurship journals. Our key challenge remains
the influencing of the meta-ranking of the field rather than just the
ranking of the journals in the field.
