Hi.  On behalf of our Entrepreneur-in-Residence I am soliciting your recommendations for simulations to use in graduate level entrepreneurship courses.  It's been quite a while since I've used simulations (and in Strategy at that).  Are there good ones to look at?  Thanks very much!

If this is "launching a high-risk business" it is quite good if you want
to use it as a group take-home assignment with feedback in one class
session. Available at good prices from HBS...works well with Sahlman's
article on writing a great business plan. We add a little flavor to it
by having students participate in a side betting pool. Every team gets
3 tries...with the highest retained equity value (in $$$) upon a
liquidity event getting the entire betting pool. This is for MBAs and
    has worked well for years.

Best to all and a great Thanksgiving...Stan

Try GEO. I developed it as an international entrepreneurship simulation. The demo is accessible from http://pages.towson.edu/precha/geonetd5.exe. Click on the link, or cut and paste it into the address bar of your web browser. Select Run/Open at all security warnings. Do not save the program, unless your browser requires it. I upgrade the server regularly, so a saved program may not work correctly after an upgrade. Your computer must have Microsoft's .NET Framework installed for the program to run. If it's not installed, you can download it free from Microsoft's web site, at http://www.msdn.com. Choose version 2.0. Register into the demo using a fictitious name and password, and then do anything you want as it's just a demo.

If you wish to use it, kindly send me a postal letter of request on institutional letterhead with information about your intended usage: No. of students, start and stop dates, graduate/undergraduate, time commitment, and so forth. If it can work for you, I will set aside space for your usage.

    Best,

I've also had several good experiences with "Launching..". However, its
purpose and style is very different from simulations like the shoe game.
You do it a couple of times against the computer and you're done. It's
basically an interactive case. Also, they haven't revised it in several
years so you can face some compatibility problems with current
    computers.

However, it is still effective. I used it last month in ex ed with
    really good results.

Has anyone used Roller Coaster Tycoon or similar Sim-City-like computer
software games? It is for kids as a general rule. What my SIFE students are
doing is teaching entrepreneurship and small business principles to middle
school kids. The learn by teaching the simulation. Many of my
undergraduates enjoy playing the game and internalize the lessons learned as
they share with the kids in local schools.

You do it a couple of times against the computer and you're done. It's
basically an interactive case. Also, they haven't revised it in several
years so you can face some compatibility problems with current

If this is "launching a high-risk business" it is quite good if you want

  • 9.  Entrepreneurship simulations

    Posted 11-26-2006 10:33
A simulation to give experience with starting up a business and writing a
    business plan

Here is an option to give students experience in both starting up a business
and working on a business plan. Try using a simulation where preparation and
presentation of the business plan is an integral part of the exercise.
I have created the Marketplace Venture Strategy simulation that is designed
for a new venture or entrepreneurship course. It has become very popular as a
way to give students experience in the start up and management of a new
enterprise. During 2006, more than 5000 students and 50 schools will have used
    the simulation.

The students work within a full-enterprise business setting where they start
up and manage a new venture. The decision content includes the essential
elements of marketing, distribution, human resources, manufacturing, finance
and accounting. The game is set for 6 decision rounds, with each round taking
two to three hours to complete.

A key ingredient of this simulation is the preparation of a business plan at
the mid-point of the exercise. Student teams must formulate a business
development strategy, along with a tactical plan and a set of pro forma
financial statements. The software provides templates for the completion of
these tasks. The preparation of the business plan is rather extensive and an
entire week is dedicated to the task.

A favorite pedagogical option of the simulation is to have the students
present their business plan to a group of outside investors and then negotiate
with these VCs for an equity investment in their firm. This experience is
highly realistic and gives the students experience in selling their ideas to
    independent, outside investors.

Another advantage of a simulation is that after the students prepare and
present their business plan, they must then execute it for an additional three
decision periods. Very seldom is it possible to execute the plan as
formulated. There is generally a need to make skillful adjustments in response
to surprises in the market or one’s own ability to make good decisions.

At the end of the exercise, the students must make a report to the investors
regarding their performance following the infusion of new equity. This report
is to underscore the students’ accountability to an investment group. They
review their plan, deviations from the plan, justification for the deviations
and how well the team has prepared the firm for the future.

In the end, the student teams are graded based upon the business plan, report
to the investors and their performance on a balanced scorecard. The balanced
scorecard includes measures of financial performance, market performance,
customer satisfaction, human resource management, investments in the future,
asset management and creation of wealth. The balanced scorecard emphasizes the
need to achieve strong performance in all areas of the business.

Obviously, there are many ways in which to give students experience in
starting up a company and preparing a business plan. A new venture simulation
    is another option to consider.

I would recommend Railroad Tycoon 2 or 3 rather that those you mention.
I would say they are more suitable for adults than Roller Coaster Tycoon
or Sim City, and are somewhat realistic in their treatment of
competition, environmental change, and business complexity. (I'm just
getting my six-year old started on Zoo Tycoon 2.) Even better however
are online games, especially EVE Online, in which an extremely
sophisticated business can be established from the ground-up, based
around an extremely realistic market, albeit without sophisticated
capital raising/exit mechanisms. I would very much like to run an
experimental course based on EVE one day.

I administer a noncommercial international entrepreneurship simulation that your students can join next semester, or I could administer a non-international entrepreneurship simulation for you. Drop me a line if interested. More information is available from my Web site, below.

You could also talk with Steven Gold or Tom Pray at RIT, and maybe join the academic simulation community at the next conference (March 16-18, 2011) of the Assn. for Business Simulation & Experiential Learning (http://www.absel.org).

    Dear Colleagues,

I am looking into the possibility of integrating a simulation game into
teaching entrepreneurship. Can anyone please tell me about their experiences
in using simulations in the entrepreneurship classroom? Were they a positive
experience? If so, what simulation game(s) would you recommend? I know there
is a free one out of MIT, but have not used it yet. I asked my students if
they would be interested in doing a simulation and nearly everyone raised
    their hands.

    Hi,
I think simulations will be a great value add. However, I use real life
projects. An example is shown in the following link on 10-minute video of
my last class project with full-time MBAs in my school:
http://tinyurl.com/qc43md8 . It may spark off some ideas for you.

You might distinguish between a management game and an entrepreneurship game. In a management game, players have no money; they are given a business to manage. In an entrepreneurship game, players have money; they choose the business they want to found, buy, sell, and manage, until they can hire another player to manage their business for them, which enables them to apply the talents to more challenging work, such as takeovers, arbitrage, and speculation.

I do supply a free entrepreneurship game for serious academic use. It's Internet based. You can download and install the demo version through my website, below. Actually, if your students just want to play, they can play the demo immediately, no hassles, no fees. But if you want serious competitive play, you'll need a special setup. E-mail me for a special setup.

I have been using Retail Entrepreneur
(https://www.interpretive.com/rd6/?pg=en) with very good feedback from
my part-time MBA students. The cost is $30 per student, and most of the
administration is handled by the software provider. You can run the
sim--advancing one round per week--over the course of a semester, or run
multiple rounds during 1.5 three-hour classes (I do the latter, but you
should be willing to handle more of the admin yourself). It can be run
against the computer or against live teams (I do the latter, as the
students really enjoy the within-class competition).

There are two aspects that I find valuable for learning. First, the sim
integrates real-world elements of entrepreneurship, in which a student
has to consider multiple dimensions (marketing, financing, strategy,
inventory, staffing, competition, etc.). This can help students
integrate ideas drawn from across their coursework. Second, the sim has
dilemmas that can be added to a round, such as situations that involve
employee theft, supplier bribery, local politics, charitable/community
support, switching suppliers, etc. As in the real-world, the simulated
firm's performance reflects the effect of bad PR, HR precedents,
unethical dealings, etc. These dilemmas create excellent opportunities
for reflection and debate, so I build in time to allow for in-class
    discussion.

The company that provides the software has always been very responsive
to my questions. They also have other sims, which might suit your needs
better. But as a former entrepreneur myself, I find this sim to be
reasonably realistic and comprehensive (esp. the operational aspects).
The sim has several other options that can allow you to customize it to
    your class needs.

    Best of luck.
