Hiya all,
A few years ago I took part in a PDW "teaching strategy beyond the case" at that session I presented the way in which I was utilising fiction to teach entrepreneurial strategy.
Since then I have used a variety of fiction texts interspersed with readings from journals to teach the entrepreneurial construct. To date I have used , Joanna Trollope Faith, the television series Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer the novel by Max Barry Jennifer Government and the film Tucker a Man and his Dream. By the time the next AOM meeting happens I would have just completed a course utilising a text book on the Fourth Crusades to teach entrepreneurial development.
In addition Robert Smith and I have just completed a paper on utilising a particular genre of fiction as a heuristic for teaching entrepreneurship.
While I know am not alone in utilising such heuristics I am also aware that there are a number of my colleagues, both here and internationally who believe such an approach is self indulgent and lacks relevance. - well I am employed to teach entrepreneurship and creativity, I suppose it's a fine line between creative and downright strange.
So, I am canvassing opinion for a PDW around the theme of alternative heuristics for teaching entrepreneurship.
The way I see this happening is that the benefits and pitfalls are outlined, the choice of material is outlined, and the way in which the groundwork is laid in order to show relevancy is outlined.
The approach I have taken over the last few years seems to be working, the students like it, they can relate to characters and events rather than business cases, and lets face it the average undergraduate is on the receiving rather than initiating end of entrepreneurship. This approach helps them to discover how they can be on the initiating end. It is I believe 'safe' and enjoyable. - even if at least one of my colleagues does not 'get it'.
Anyway are there any takers, if so let me know and we can put together a proposal for the ENT PDW next year.
Enjoy the week people
Kind Regards
