I would like to change this stream of discussion a bit. Here is the question. How do you handle pro formas for the student business plans? Most of my students have had the freshman accounting classes, but have forgotten or repressed most of that by the time they are juniors or seniors when they take my course. Do you give special training on pro formas or simply leave this up to them to learn or recall on their own?

We've had that problem too. We're doing bootcamps in the business plan class, and I always have a co-teacher who is an accounting/finance person, so there is a lot of high-quality advice. We also have a former CFO with an easygoing manner as one of our executives in residence, who can be approached for help and advice. This year, in the intro to entrepreneurship class, we are planning an all-out push for accounting night, with all our numbers people showing up to take each student team and work with them on numbers. Will report next semester on how well it worked.

Hi

I have engineers, educations, fine arts student and others as well as
business students in my business planning class. I do about 1.5 hour
classes on proforma statements. The non-business students do as well or
better than the business students when producing proformas, particlalrly
cashflow.

Hi Fred:

I use an online tutorial based on work done by Ron Foster and Pete Mullins at the University of Ohio in the early 80's. It was developed into a multi-media piece by a student I supervised and has been very effective for us. You could also take a look at a tool developed by a colleague, Barry Bisson that as of this year is bundled as part of the course materials with the latest edition of New Venture Creation by Timmons and Spinelli. If you would like to take a look at the tutorial I am using go to:

Software helps. Check out Jerry Katz book and others that include software to help with proformas. A refresher seminar or brining in bankers is helpful to me. Bill
