    PDW: Platforms and Ecosystems: New Perspectives for the Scope of the Firm in the Age of Open Innovation

    Dear Colleagues,

    We are organizing a professional development workshop (PDW) on Platforms and Ecosystems: New Perspectives for the Scope of the Firm in the Age of Open Innovation, which we believe might be relevant to scholars investigating the boundaries of the firm, inter-firm relationships and collaboration, open innovation, and competitive dynamics. The topics that will be addressed in this PDW include:

    • The role of economic complementarity and technical interdependency in determining the scope of a firm's activities;
    • The challenges platform leaders face to create a "workable ecosystem", and the tradeoff between complementor quality and quantity;
    • The new challenges new business ventures face to managing platform-based dependencies and navigating these new technological and market landscapes;
    • The core "identity" issues relating to the definitional elements of an ecosystem;
    • The challenges that firms operating in an ecosystem face when deciding which activities to conduct internally, outsource or source concurrently;
    • The challenges that firms operating in an ecosystem face when determining which partners to cooperate with and how to manage these relationships;
