    Dear friends and colleagues,

If you work on or are simply interested in the role of design in (and
for) management, please join us in Anaheim to discuss “Using design to
build (more) meaningful organizations: Toward a research agenda”, a PDW
sponsored by TIM, OMT, and ENT divisions. It will take place on Friday,
August 5, 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, in the Northeast Marquis Ballroom
    (Anaheim Marriott).

We have a fantastic line-up of panelists, who will kick start the
conversation and then help us unveil challenges and opportunities for
management scholars interested in this topic. We aim to make this a very
inclusive and practical session – our goal is to help jump starting a
community focusing on design in management and we have activities in
place to facilitate the start of actual projects among participants by
    the end of the session.

Details concerning the time, location, and content of the PDW are
summarized below. No registration is required, but please reach out to
the organizers if you have any questions
    (fabio.fonti@esc-rennes.com, liedtkaj@darden.virginia.edu,
    i.stigliani@imperial.ac.uk, tedt@smu.edu.sg).

We look forward to seeing you at AOM!

    All the best,
Fabio Fonti, Jeanne Liedtka, Ileana Stigliani, and Ted Tschang

    PDW overview
Design plays a central role in building more meaningful organizations.
However, while design practice has informed management when it comes to
pedagogy, we still know relatively little about what design actually is,
since research on this topic is limited. What is still missing to apply
designers’ skills and associated practices to organizational settings –
and transfer them more effectively to managers interested in leveraging
it toward technological and managerial innovation – is a clear
understanding of what design is, of the processes and methods that
underlies it, as well as of the mechanisms that make designers effective
in dealing with complex problems and/or contexts. We view this PDW as an
opportunity to start a conversation around these topics and to outline a
research agenda for a community of management researchers interested in
studying how design can be applied in organizations. Taking our cue from
design, we will apply design thinking tools to facilitate collaborative
problem exploration and opportunity identification across a range of
issues related to design in management, such as the nature of design
itself, its constitutive practices and processes (and what makes them
effective innovation enablers in organizations), the role of design as a
capability, and the differences in design across fields and cultures.
Leveraging a human-centered approach, we will start from the personal
journeys of the attendees – both panel members and workshop participants
    – and invite them to share their perspectives as well as the challenges
and opportunities they envision, then move to jointly brainstorm new
possibilities, and close by facilitating partners selection for future
research projects focusing on design in management. Our aim is to
inspire a design conversation that is interactive, inclusive,
developmental, valuable, provocative, and future- focused.
