    Posted 06-16-2016 20:30
Hi I was wondering if anyone knew of some fun entrepreneurship exercises that would be suitable to use during an entrepreneurship camp for high school students.

I will compile all the responses to share with interested parties.

    Thanks so much!

    Mark,

Attached is a list of projects that might be possible. I have cut it down
from a list of 11 such projects that I used to assign in my undergraduate
Entrepreneurship course. Basically, I have cut out five of the projects
that most high school students would have difficulty doing. However, the
Entrepreneurial Biographical Analysis and Small Business Analysis do really
require the student to know the key person involved personally, otherwise
they are usually not able to get the level of cooperation and type of
information that they will need to do a really good job. The New Venture
Feasibility Analysis is very doable though.

    Hi Chuck,

Can you send us a list of all of your exercises in case some of us wants to use one or more of the others. It's always nice to see what others are doing or have done.

Chuck is right about having them do a New Venture Feasibility Analysis, almost always a mind-opening exercise. The best and most widely-used resource for how to do so is The New Business Road Test (FT Publishing 2013). Chapter 1 is available for downloading for free on my London Business School website at https://www.london.edu/faculty-and-research/faculty/profiles/mullins-j?page=2#.V2XE8zWumuk.

  • 5.  IIT AGNE Business Plan Competition

    Posted 06-27-2016 18:17
    All,

In late May 2016, a member of the E-Division sent out an E-mail
regarding a new business plan competition held in association
with the Leadership Conference that will be held in Rhode Island
this coming August that is being hosted by the Indian Institute
of Technology Association of Greater New England (IIT AGNE).

In an earlier E-mail dated 13 June 2016, I reported on the
competition’s seven Rules for participation. In particular,
I reported that the competition’s Rule 2 that stated that
“The ventures must have been “in operation” for three years
or less, or the ventures must not yet have reached cash flow
positive status” was different from that used in most other
intercollegiate competitions. In addition to reporting this
to all of you, I also contacted the IIT AGNE Competition
Director and in a series of E-mail exchanges send him a copy
of the Rules used in all venture Labs feeder competitions.

The purpose of this E-mail is to inform you that as a result
of these E-mail exchanges, the IIT AGNE competition has now
changed its rules to be consistent with those used in most
other intercollegiate competitions so that bio-tech, health
care, and medical ventures that use university-based
technologies whose team members have been out of school for
more than three years will still be eligible so long as they
meet all of the other IIT AGNE competition criteria.

In addition, the IIT AGNE competition has also changed its
submission date to July 10, 2016. So, if you have any bio-tech,
health care, and medical ventures that use university-based
technologies whose team members have been out of school for
more than three years, you might want to contact them and let
them know that they may now qualify for the IIT AGNE
    competition under its new Rules.

    Respectfully,

    Todd,

As requested, I have attached a copy of the complete list of Entrepreneurship
projects that I use in my first undergraduate and graduate courses in E-ship,
as opposed to just the six that could be cone by high school students.
I also have more detailed descriptions of the "specs" of each of these projects.
Since several have commented on the usefulness of a New venture Feasibility
Analysis, I have attached a one page Summary of what i want in such analyses.

    Sincerely,

    Dear Mark,

a couple of years ago we we tested the effect of 21 entrepreneurship programs in Belgian high schools on a range of entrepreneurship variables (motivation, feasibility and the likes) among more than 2000 pupils. The entrepreneurship initiatives varied in length, intensity and other dimensions.

One of the interesting findings was that it is not necessary to "sell" a program as an entrepreneurship program. We found some of the highest changes in perceived feasibility of entrepreneurship with a program that was not explicitly focused on entrepreneurship: the objective of the project was "simply" to organize a music festival on the school's premises.

You can find the paper here, or here as a working paper:

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew of some fun entrepreneurship exercises that would be suitable to use during an entrepreneurship camp for high school students.

I will compile all the responses to share with interested parties.

    Thanks so much!
