Research in Start-ups: The View from Inside
Monday Aug 14 from 4:10-5:20pm in
Hyatt, Brussels Room, Embassy Level
2006 Academy of Management Annual Conference
This caucus brings together entrepreneurship scholars (ENT) who have an
interest in studying start-up firms from the inside out, including the
views, behaviors, attitudes, performance and jobs of employees and
teams, and non-entrepreneurship scholars (e.g. OB, HR & ODC) with an
interest in entrepreneurial, innovative, and high-growth organizations.
Much research on start-ups takes a macro perspective or focuses solely
on founders or founding teams. A group of us are pushing to extend
research to more thoroughly examine micro and meso processes and
dynamics within evolving new organizations. This caucus will focus on
two primary topics:
1) Managing the challenges associated with data collection in start-up
firms (e.g., locating, contacting and gaining entry to start-up firms,
dealing with employees and founders, respecting privacy issues, and
working around the sense of urgency in active, small firms)
2) Exploring theoretical issues related to studying new firms and their
employees (e.g., the meso processes and dynamics within evolving new
organizations, the appropriateness of using existing scales in these
settings, etc.)
New and experienced scholars are invited to join the discussion, meet
like-minded colleagues, and build momentum for this cutting-edge
research stream.
