ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEMS: EMERGING RESEARCH DIRECTIONS
Organizer: Llewellyn DW Thomas
Facilitators: Mike Wright, Erkko Autio, Satish Nambisan, Phil Auerswald
Date/Time: Saturday 6th August 2016 from 12:00PM to 1:30PM
Location: Carmel at the Hilton Anaheim
The purpose of this workshop is to identify important and novel research questions and bring together a community of scholars around entrepreneurial ecosystems. Popular business press and non-governmental organizations such as the OECD have emphasized the rise of entrepreneurial ecosystems, but academic scholarship on this topic is only beginning to emerge. Our panellists will present early insights into research on entrepreneurial ecosystems. We attempt to engage the workshop participants in an exploratory discussion of the emerging research agenda and begin to establish a research community.
The workshop will cover a number of topics, including:
· Theorizing the concept(s) of entrepreneurial ecosystems.
o How should entrepreneurial ecosystems be conceptualized?
o Can we identify conceptually distinct archetypes of entrepreneurial ecosystems?
o How do entrepreneurial ecosystems differ from other widely used contextual concepts, such as markets, clusters, industries, value chains, networks, and organizational fields?
· Business models in entrepreneurial ecosystems
o What features characterize successful business models in entrepreneurial ecosystem contexts?
o What are the business models that new ventures use to connect to entrepreneurial ecosystems? How do the two concepts connect?
o Do the leaders of successful entrepreneurial ecosystems have similar business models?
· Ecosystem externalities and disruptive competition
o What are the strategies and business models that entrepreneurial ventures can use to gain entry to markets and unseat established incumbents?
o How can entrepreneurial ventures build and leverage ecosystem momentum for competitive advantage?
o What are the most salient ecosystem externalities that new ventures can leverage for rapid growth?
· Ecosystem creation
o What are the processes that characterize the creation of new entrepreneurial ecosystems?
o How do the roles of specific participants, such as universities, accelerators and VCs, interact with early stage ventures in ecosystem creation?
o When can entrepreneurial new firms and industry incumbents create and drive ecosystems for competitive advantage?
o How important is geographical location?
o Are there any policy recommendations that can optimize the conditions for entrepreneurial ecosystem creation?
· Ecosystem dynamics
o What are the best strategies for entrepreneurial ecosystem orchestration?
o What processes underpin the relationships between different ecosystem participants?
o Do particular participants, for example universities, always occupy the same network position and role?
o How does knowledge sharing occur in entrepreneurial ecosystems?
o How do entrepreneurial ecosystems interact with the wider economy in which they are situated?
· Policy for entrepreneurial ecosystems
o Which policies are the most effective in supporting the creation and operation of entrepreneurial ecosystems?
o What are the appropriate roles of policy-makers in entrepreneurial ecosystem management?
o How can public-private partnerships be leveraged for entrepreneurial ecosystem facilitation?
o What characterizes successful entrepreneurial ecosystems?
The organizer and majority of the facilitators are currently co-editing a Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal (SEJ) Special Issue on Entrepreneurial Ecosystems. It is anticipated that insights from this editing process will be sufficiently developed to be able to provide a useful input into the workshop experience. Furthermore, given the widespread policy interest in entrepreneurial ecosystems, we expect both scholars and practitioners to be interested from management disciplines beyond the sponsoring divisions.
