Special Issue: Institutional perspectives on gender and entrepreneurship
Jointly Guest Edited by: Helene Ahl,

    Introduction from the Guest Editors

We'd like to invite our colleagues to consider work in their fields that engages discussion of men and women, sex and gender – and then to explore this complimentary special issue on these topics and entrepreneurship from an institutional perspective. In "doing gender" (West and Zimmerman, 1987; Butler, 1990), social constructions of masculinity and femininity are reified as they are repeated again and again. These reifications influence practice and theory as entrepreneurs, policy makers and scholars employ gender constructions repeatedly and often, invisibly.

We see the study of the intersection of institutions as rich and important work, and believe it should be extended in entrepreneurship from a variety of discipline lens. The nation, the state, religion, welfare and other regulatory systems, language, data, and statistics as means of research, are all examples of institutions that intersect with entrepreneurship so as to have consequences for men and women entrepreneurs, and thus society. We thank those who shared their excellent scholarship in this special issue as well as the Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship (Emerald) for providing the venue. We welcome your comments and questions and invite you to consider this new journal for your upcoming publishing.
