India is one of the world's most vibrant economies and a subject of much interest to management academics and practitioners. Yet, rigorous research within the management field that employs Indian firms as the context or India as the research site has been sparse.  Much attention has been given to the information technology (IT) / outsourcing sectors and corporate governance issues in the context of India and Indian firms. With this call for papers, APJM intends to take a step in remedying this situation.   The intent is to spotlight Indian innovation and entrepreneurship across various sectors as well as place current developments within a larger socio-political context.  Therefore, this special issue is expected to deepen our theoretical and empirical understanding of India and Indian firms, as well as the unique challenges that emerging economies face.

This special issue focuses on Indian innovation and entrepreneurship and explores the proposition that these phenomena are qualitatively different from their manifestations in other parts of the world.  Therefore, we invite papers that develop or extend existing theories of entrepreneurship and innovation using India or Indian firms as an empirical context or strategic research site.

Topic areas include (but are not limited to):

    1) India's national innovation system and entrepreneurship infrastructure
    2) The role of the public sector, universities, governments (national/state/city) and various financing mechanisms (banks, VC's, etc) in fostering innovation/entrepreneurship in India
    3) Innovation clusters in India
    4) Challenges of innovation and entrepreneurship in the Indian context
    5) Multinationals and the organization of their innovation activity in India
    6) Corporate entrepreneurship – how Indian firms are organizing for innovation
    7) The emergence of a new breed of Indian firms and entrepreneurs since the 1980's (such as Infosys, Bharti Airtel, Biocon, HCL and their respective founders, etc.)
    8) Innovation in organizational forms – how indigenous family businesses are adapting themselves to compete on the global stage
    9) The role of the Indian diaspora in nurturing innovation within India
    10) The role played by specific communities in India (such as the Gujaratis, Sindhis, etc) in fostering entrepreneurship
    11)  Social entrepreneurship: innovative products, services and organizations focused on serving the masses; the role of NGOs and foundations
    12)  Innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging sectors such as alternative energy
    13)  New/unique models of innovation and entrepreneurship within the Indian context – such as "jugaad" and lean innovation
    14)  Critical perspectives: Are innovation and entrepreneurship contributing to increasing economic polarization of the Indian society?

Empirical papers (both quantitative/qualitative) that employ theoretical perspectives from the fields of strategy, entrepreneurship, international business, organization studies, marketing and innovation and more conceptual papers, especially those that are grounded in economics, sociology, history, political science and critical studies are welcome. Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

All papers will be refereed through a double-blind peer-review process.  A conference based on submissions to the special issue is being planned to run tentatively around July of 2012 (details to follow). A guide for authors, sample copies and other relevant information for submitting papers are available on the Author Guidelines webpage of APJM or by clicking here: http://www.springer.com/business+%26+management/business+for+professionals/journal/10490.
