We plan to publish 4 to 6 papers in a special issue on Community-Based,
Social & Societal Entrepreneurship. We are seeking papers with sound
theoretical contributions. The literature on how regional development has
been facilitated by community, societal and social entrepreneurship has
grown significantly in the past decade (Hemingway, 2005) Peredo and
Chrisman, 2006). People and businesses globally are increasingly being
influenced by societal and community interaction (Johannisson and Nilsson,
1989; Spear, 2006). More businesses and public policy practitioners are
focusing on how people work together to encourage regional development
(Bulla and Starr-Glass, 2006) Lyons, 2002). In this special issue we
classify community, societal and social entrepreneurship as when people act
corporately to pursue a common purpose. Other disciplines have recognized
the important economic role of community, societal and social
entrepreneurship (e.g., Bull and Winter, 1991; Johannisson and Nilsson,
1989; Light and Karageorgis, 1994; Mezias and Kuperman, 2001; Selsky and
Smith, 1994). Thus, the topic of community-based, social and societal
entrepreneurship has been a recurring theme in various Entrepreneurship and
Regional Development papers since 1990. For example, Stone and Stubbs (2007)
focused on how societal entrepreneurship in the form of lifestyle migration
has encouraged regional development in Southern Europe. Likewise, Frank,
Lueger and Korunka (2007) examined the role of social and societal
entrepreneurship in shaping a person's personality and business success.
Thus, this special issue encompasses many ideas that have been discussed
previously in Entrepreneurship & Regional Development but collates them into
specific theme on community, societal and social entrepreneurship; the aim
in the special issue is to demonstrate how different forms of
entrepreneurship (community-based, societal and social) impact on a region's
growth and development rate. We are looking for new theoretical insights and
empirical studies that link these important areas together.
Subject Coverage
Suitable topics include, but are not limited to:
. What is the nature of community-based, social and societal
entrepreneurship?
. How has community-based, social and societal entrepreneurship influenced
regional development in global contexts and will this change in the future?
. Comparative differences in community-based, social and societal
entrepreneurship by countries, city, ethnic/national subgroup, sector and
periods.
. The role of social capital and social networks in community-based, social
and societal entrepreneurship.
. The role of technological innovation in community-based, social and
societal entrepreneurship.
. The importance of communities and society for the perception, evaluation
and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities.
. Community-based and social women entrepreneurs - challenges, profile and
differences with regard to male community entrepreneurs.
. Market conditions for community-based, social and societal
entrepreneurship (openness of markets, regulations, transparency of market
and resource mobilisation).
. The importance of cognitions and emotions in community-based, social and
societal entrepreneurship.
. The role of human resource management practices and in community-based,
social and societal entrepreneurship.
. Public perception of community-based, social and societal
entrepreneurship.
. The antecedents and consequences of family participation in various
aspects of community-based, social and societal entrepreneurship.
Manuscripts must be received by December 31, 2008. Authors should prepare
manuscripts in accordance with Entrepreneurship & Regional Development
guidelines. Please submit manuscripts in a word-compatible format
electronically. Questions may be addressed to any of the special issue

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently
under consideration for publication elsewhere.
