Dear Norris,

The Venn is a good idea. But the overlap is small, I think: Most entrepreneurship is not very innovative. And much innovation occurs outside business, in other realms of human expression.

Alex,

I too missed the post. I purposely had the Lyles Center named with Innovation before Entrepreneurship. Unlike many Centers, we are not housed in a School or College, but are a University unit. I wanted to make sure Innovation was a primary focus of our work as it encompasses all disciplines where entrepreneurship is more limited. As a result we have 21 faculty on campus in every college but Library Sciences who teach a component of innovation or entrepreneurship in a course each semester. We also work extensively in K-12 schools delivering innovation STEM curricula we developed reaching 14,000 kids a week. Our Innovate Fresno State program works with inventors to commercialize their product idea eventually preparing them for investment pitches.

The Lyles Center has 35 employees to facilitate our efforts both on and off campus.

Dear Craig and Tom,

Very generous, thank you. To clarify: My benchmark for the intersection in Norris Krueger’s Venn would Polaroid (and Edwin Land). We might add the Bauhaus — where the fusion of art, technology, and business was pioneered. I have begun writing a book about this stuff; the working title is “Deep Innovation”.

Quick introduction, as I am new to this list: I am a serial (social) entrepreneur, trained philosopher, and currently on academic sabbatical. Most recently I have been working in venture philanthropy. My approach to discontinuous innovation (and entrepreneurship) is philosophical, humanistic, and aesthetic. Hence the unusual angle. This is not new, of course — only out of fashion: Joseph Schumpeter thought of entrepreneurship in just this way. It is time to reconnect innovation with human flourishing.
