  • 1.  Simple checklists for rating/scoring/ranking business ideas?

I am seeking your recommendations for quick and easy checklists that a student could use to rate/score/rank their business ideas. Currently my students employ the First Screen found in Bruce Barringer's "Preparing Effective Business Plans" book.  He looks at 25 things on a three point scale. I am looking for tools like that which are similar but different so that my students can not only use a few tools but also learn about subjectivity by comparing and contrasting various rating mechanisms. What do you recommend? I am hoping that there are things out there which are not buried inside of expensive books...

I like theinnographer.com's approach. Very visual, very simple. QAt the other extreme is the FastTrak I approach which is probably the most detailed workup out there (http://fasttrac.org/). Jerry

    Hi, Geoff:

Here at the University of Alabama we are developing a semester-long course dedicated to the discovery, evaluation, development, and pitching of entrepreneurial opportunities. We will launch it this spring. I have been developing a checklist of evaluation statements that are based on lean startup, value proposition canvas, business model canvas, and customer development methodologies. The draft for the checklist is available at https://goo.gl/yLcovi. I hope you do not find this solution to be too expensive () and that several of you find them useful. Suggestions are always welcomed.

    Kind regards,
    Craig

There's a good list of 44 criteria in 7 overall categories in Sean Wise's book "Hot or Not"

The Critical factor Assessment is a well validated tool set that has been used by the Canadian Innovation Centre for twenty years - and reviewed over 20,000 opportunities. Its veracity has been confirmed by several research papers, especially those by Tom Astebro.

It is also mentioned in Daniel Kahneman's new book - Thinking Fast thinking Slow.

In my recent book, Getting Funded, I used the following criteria to assess an opportunity:

    1. Is the customer pain real and widespread?
    2. Is the relative advantage of the product superior enough?
    3. Is the customer willing to pay for the relative advantage?
