    Position Announcement
    Assistant Professor, American Indian Studies & Management;
    or American Indian Studies & Economics

    The American Indian Studies (AIS) Department at the University of Arizona, in collaboration with the Eller College of Management, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Native American & (Global) Indigenous Entrepreneurship. AIS will be the home unit for this position, but the incumbent will also be expected to contribute to, and work with, faculty from the Eller College of Management. Applications are encouraged from individuals with a range of expertise in American Indian cultural and community issues and business.

    The American Indian Studies Department (http://ais.arizona.edu) at the University of Arizona is recognized as a leader in education and scholarship on American Indian topics, as well as a leader in outreach and service to American Indian communities. Entrepreneurship and economic development were recently listed as the number one priority of Arizona’s Indian Nations. The AIS vision starts with the motto of “Being first in Native Knowledge.” The longer version of the vision is to be the leading department of American Indian Studies in North America in both educating students (Indian and non- Indian) to meet their goals, as well as at helping Indian communities to achieve their goals. Our mission also includes taking the lead in helping the University of Arizona as a whole promote Indian community wellbeing and achieve quality scholarship on American-Indian topics. The current position is part of an effort to expand the offerings of the Department and add to its existing strengths in order to better serve students and communities.

    Founded as an interdisciplinary graduate program in the 1980’s, the AIS department has also just begun offering a Bachelor’s degree. The successful candidate for the current position will teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as work actively with the 22 American Indian tribes in Arizona (and with non-Indian communities and organizations in Arizona and throughout the Southwestern United States). As Arizona’s Land-Grant university, the University of Arizona supports and encourages involvement with a broad range of communities and constituencies in Arizona and throughout the world. A number of units at the University of Arizona besides AIS have substantial research and educational interests and strengths related to American Indians (e.g., the School of Anthropology; the Department of Linguistics; the Arizona Health Sciences Center; the Native Nations Institute). AIS collaborates with those units toward making the university a recognized leader in American-Indian and global-indigenous education, scholarship and outreach.

    The Eller College of Management (https://www.eller.arizona.edu) is highly-ranked across the board in management and other business areas (e.g., economics; accounting; Management Information Systems) in both education (undergraduate and graduate) and scholarship. The McGuire Entrepreneurship Center within the Eller College (https://entrepreneurship.eller.arizona.edu) houses the #3 ranked undergraduate, and #5 ranked graduate, entrepreneurship programs in North America. The McGuire Center has the vision of being a global leader in entrepreneurship and innovation education and research. It has a mission of helping students improve their potential and advance society by developing an entrepreneurial and innovative mindset. The McGuire Center and the Eller College desire to enhance their current strengths by adding emphasis on the education of American Indian students, the education of non-Indian students interested in working in or with Indian communities, and outreach to Indian Nations. Candidates for the current position will be expected to also be able to contribute to the mission and goals of the McGuire Center and the Eller College. The position comes with a partial appointment in the McGuire Center.

    At the University of Arizona, we value our inclusive climate because we know that diversity in experience and perspectives is vital to advancing innovation, promoting critical thinking, solving complex problems, and creating a dynamic and supportive academic community. We translate those values into action by seeking individuals who have experience and expertise at working with diverse students, colleagues, and constituencies. Because we seek a workforce with diverse perspectives and experiences, we encourage applications from women, veterans, members of minority groups, and people with disabilities. As an Employer of National Service, we also welcome applications from alumni of Americorps, the Peace Corps, or other national service groups.

    Additional information about the position, along with the application requirements and an on-line application link, are on the University of Arizona HR website https://uacareers.com/postings/6944 under job number F20274. As part of the application, a complete CV must be submitted that includes the names and all contact information (email, phone number, mailing address) of three referees. A Ph.D. or the equivalent terminal degree will be required by the official start date. Salary is commensurate with experience and expertise. Review of applications will begin on January 11, 2016. The anticipated start date of the position, subject to final budgetary approval, is August, 2016.
