2016 ENT Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

The Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) are often the most rewarding, stimulating, and enjoyable sessions of the Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting. Consistent with its reputation of being one of the Academy’s most innovative and inclusive divisions, the Entrepreneurship Division invites submissions of creative and innovative proposals for interactive PDW sessions for the 2016 AOM Conference in Anaheim, CA, USA.
Given its “We Grow Entrepreneurial Scholars” mission, the ENT Division favors proposals that provide the opportunity for every participant to learn and grow as an entrepreneurship scholar, educator or practitioner. Sessions should foster collaborations and meaningfully build the human and social capital of attendees. The ultimate goal of every PDW organizer is to ensure that all participants leave the session with new skills, ideas, experiences, inspirations, or relationships they did not have prior to the session. PDWs must promote widespread, active participation and provide valuable personal- or profession-enhancing experiences.
PDW sessions typically take on a variety of interactive formats (e.g., workshops, breakout sessions, tutorials, discussion panels, research incubators, or town hall meetings) and are intended to provide a forum for the exchange ideas in a manner that does not typically fit within the traditional constraints of paper and symposium sessions. PDWs should provide the opportunity for organizers and participants to share their knowledge and expertise in a flexible, highly interactive fashion which can extend beyond the physical/time/space limits of the conference setting. They present the opportunity to experiment with new models of interaction and engagement. Innovative topics/themes, innovative means of exchange, and experimental formats/sessions (e.g., integrates novel use of technology, creates sustained interactions among participants before and after the conference, or engages participants in new ways) are highly encouraged.
Proposals should be of interest to members of the Entrepreneurship Division, or fit its domain, which is as follows: (a) the actors, actions, resources, environmental influences and outcomes associated with the emergence of entrepreneurial opportunities and/or new economic activities in multiple organizational contexts, and (b) the characteristics, actions, and challenges of owner-managers and their businesses.
Effective PDWs, however, should not only stimulate conversations and interactions across individuals or groups within our division (e.g., between practitioners and academics, between international and domestic scholars, or between academics following different career paths, or between junior and senior scholars), but can also attract interest and foster exchanges across the divisional lines of the Academy. Thus, you are encouraged to work with a variety of colleagues within and outside the Division and submit appropriate PDW proposals which may also have broad appeal to the Academy membership at-large. Sessions that significantly promote and advance the practice of entrepreneurship research and teaching excellence will be favored. While not required, submitters are encourage to consider the conference theme “Making Organizations Meaningful” when developing their proposals.
While submitters have broad discretion in designing PDW sessions, acceptance of proposals for sessions will be based on: (a) the value of the personal- or professional-enhancing experiences and “takeaways” for participants (b) the plans for creating an interactive and engaging session; (c) the breadth of interest of the session for individuals and groups within the Division and the broader Academy; (d) the innovativeness of the topic or the forum for the exchanges; (e) the effective use of program time; and (f) the fit with the conference theme. We encourage proposals which explicitly address these six criteria.
The submission system opens Tuesday, November 10, 2015 and all submissions must be made electronically. Submissions emailed directly to the PDW Chair will not be accepted. PDW proposals that do not match the general PDW guidelines in the AOM call for submissions will not be reviewed.
All proposals require a statement indicating that all PDW participants have consented to participate in the PDW. The AOM’s “Rule of Three” for the PDW program is that “no one may submit or be associated with more than 3 PDW submissions; or appear in more than 3 PDW sessions during the preconference from Friday to Saturday, regardless of whether the sessions are held on-site or off-site.” Proposals that violate these rules may be rejected. Space and time allotted for PDW sessions is limited; we cannot guarantee acceptance of all proposals.
